Favorite Romulan Character

Commander

There's a thread for favorite Klingon characters. How about favorite Romulan characters? This would be confined to TV Trek and movie Trek.

1. Romulan Commander in "Balance of Terror" played by Mark Lenard.
2. Centurion in "Balance of Terror" played by John Warbutton.
3. Decius in "Balance of Terror" played by Lawrence Montaigne(?).
4. Romulan Commander in "The Enterprise Incident" played by Joanne
Linville.
5. SubCommander Tal in "The Enterprise Incident" played by Jack
Donner.
6. Tebok(?) Romulan Commander playrd by Marc Alaimo.
7. Tomalauk Romulan Commander played by Andreas Katsulas in many
episodes.
8. Centurion Bocra played by John Snyder in "The Enemy"
9. Commander Sela played by Denise Crosby.
10. Senator Pardek played by Malachi Throne
11. D'Tan played by I forget in "Unification".
12. Commander Toreth and Commander Tauris played by Caroline
Seymour.
13. The SubCommander in "Face of the Enemy"
14. Senator Cretak played by Adrienne Barbeau in DS9 episodes
15. SubCommander T'Ruhl played by Martha Hackett in DS9 episodes.
16. Stephen McHattie as Senator Vreenak in "The Pale Moonlight".
17. Commander Donatra in the movie "Nemesis".

I didn't mention Kirstie Alley or Robin Curtis as Saavik TWOK and TSFS because the character Saavik was never referred to as a Romulan in those movies only in the novel tie-ins.

There are a few Romulans that have made an impression on me.

-Mark Lenard's Commander. A very compelling character, most notably because while he is undeniably the villain, he is not an evil man, just an officer performing his duty. It is exactly like he said to Kirk, in another reality they could have been friends.

-Commander Tomalak. Andreas Katsulas delivered a performance that really sticks out and makes Tomalak a memorable character, despite having relatively little screen time.

-Senator Vreenak. Aside from having quite possibly one of DS9's coolest scenes (the often parodied "it's a FAKE!!!") every scene with this guy is just downright awesome, and it one of the contributing factors of what makes In The Pale Moonlight such an excellent episode.

-Chairman Koval. His blunt attitude and rudeness always appealed to me. Like when Bashir says "it's a pleasure to meet you," and he asks "and why is that?"

Mark Lenard is the classic but Tomalak is the best of the slimy TNG Romulans

Many would say that he's a Romulan patriot just like G'Kar(?) in B5. He's a worthy opponent to Capt. Picard.

TOS had some slimy Romulans. What about that SubCommander Tal in "The Enterprise Incident"? Was he just some by the book guy or an opportunist that let his commanding officer run off a cliff for Spock? He was an enigmatic character well played by Jack Donner. You were never sure.

That's what I like about this list is that ST didn't have cookie cutter characters for the Romulans. Decius, D'Tan, and the SubCommander from "Face of the Enemy" were very idealistic even naive. Not all of the Romulans were skulking Machiavellians.

Either the Romulan Commander from Balance of Terror or Commander Tomalak from The Enemy and other TNG eps....

Mark Lenard's Commander
If forced to choose from screen Romulans, this would easily be my choice - but I'd much rather say either Ael t'Rllaillieu or S'task himself.

Of course, Caithlin Dar (Star Trek V) was the easiest on the eyes, but I don't really think that's enough to base the decision off of. ;)

And Saavik's half-Romulan-ness was mentioned in the novelization for ST III - would that be enough to allow her selection? (Not that she'd be my choice, anyway.)

Mind you, I'm not very familiar with TOS or ENT, so I'm going with what I remember the best.

Alidar Jarok, definitely. But I also found myself really liking Donatra and Cretak for some reason. But another Romulan who made an impression--though his appearance was very, very brief--was the commander from the episode "The Chase." His comments at the end seemed to harken back to what I've read of "Balance of Terror"...that chance that someday the Romulans and Federation might no longer be at each other's throats.

I don't really know much about Romulan characters, but this lady was mighty pretty http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/m...mander2268.jpg/789px-RomulanCommander2268.jpg :)

Ah yes...Charvanek (as the novels call her). Smokin'.

I remember Andreas Katsulas said once that his favorite way to play Tomalak was as a huge face on the Ent-D viewscreen, and that he wasn't as comfortable actually being in scenes with other characters (such as "Future Imperfect").

Also, the OP forgot another cool Romulan - Telek R'Mor (from VOY's "Eye of the Needle"). Why do I like the guy? First, he's just a scientist, not a gung ho military commander. He was quite willing to help the Voyager crew but sadly he died before he could deliver their messages. :( Also he was played by Vaughn Armstrong, and by definition every character he plays is teh coolness. :techman:

But probably my favorite Romulan of all time is one who appeared only in novels - Ruanek.

Mine would be the Romulan Comamnder from "The Enterprise Incident."

Spock does refer to Saavik's Romulan heritage in a deleted scene in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It's a little snip cut from the scene where Kirk runs into Spock outside the simulation chamber ("Aren't you dead?") but before the part where he presents the book. I don't have the link but it can be found on YouTube.

1. Romulan Commander in "Balance of Terror" played by Mark Lenard.
7. Tomalauk Romulan Commander played by Andreas Katsulas in many
episodes.
8. Centurion Bocra played by John Snyder in "The Enemy"*
14. Senator Cretak played by Adrienne Barbeau in DS9 episodes
15. SubCommander T'Ruhl played by Martha Hackett in DS9 episodes.
16. Stephen McHattie as Senator Vreenak in "The Pale Moonlight".

Also David Birney as Letant in DS9.

*Good old Bocra, he's the "most Romulan" of all the Romulans to me, for some reason.

Hmm. Not sure who my favourite Romulan is but there are quite a few good ones. If only the Romulans had been devloped to the extent of the Cardassians; they always seemed a bit underused.

Top 5
1. Romulan Commander 'Balance of Terror'
2. Senetor Vreenak 'In The Pale Moonlight'
3. Commander Tomalak TNG
4. Romulan Commander 'The Enterprise Incident'
5. Senetor Cretak DS9

Mark Lenard in Balance of Terror is absolute class.

Do they have to be 100% Romulan? While I liked Tomalak, I think my all time favorite would have to Be Deanna Troi disquised as a Romulan.

If Saavik would indeed count, Kirstie Alley's Saavik would be my choice.

Otherwise I loved Commander Donatra from the Star Trek Nemesis.

My apologies for omitting Admiral Jarok! By all means put him in the mix!:rommie:

I've heard that SubCommander T'Ruhl was going to be made a recurring character on DS9. It's too bad they didn't do that. The character of Garak worked very well on that series; that is providing a non-Federation perspective. T'Ruhl would have added to that.

Of course, it could be argued that there already was enough of a nonFed perspective on DS9.

The Romulans were also the only ST species that did not have a permanent series character:(. Gul Dukat, Garak, and Damar add up to a permanent Cardassian.

Romulans are my favorite alien race next to the Andorians, and several other TOS aliens.

1. Decius...from Balance of Terror...
2. Romulan Commander from Balance of Terror ~Honorable character

3. Romulan Commander from Enterprise Incident~Tough and sexy...

4. Subcommander Tal from Enterprise Incident~This character is just 'cool'...

5. Saavik from the TOS films~It wasn't really established she was half-Romulan onscreen, only in the novels...and a TWOK deleted scene.
