Favorite original characters from Trek novels.

I've seen Naraht mentioned, he was the Horta who served in Starfleet in Diane Duane's novels, right?

I read something once, I wondered if it was true or not. I read that the Next Gen. episode "Where No One Has Gone Before" was very loosely based on "Wounded Sky". Instead of a silicon based spider K't'lk, you had a humanoid Traveler.

Reyes and T'Prynn, Vaughn, Zar, Shucorion...

And I absolutely second O'Donnell and Fife - it's really a shame that they don't have a series of their own. I'd buy that one in a heartbeat, which I can't say about VOY overall.

Yup.

That is true. Diane Duane has written about the process of submitting the script (along with Michael Reaves) and seeing it transformed into something almost completely different:

Yeah, I like "Wounded Sky" much better than "Where No One Has Gone Before". Oh, I like it too, it's probably one of my favorite episodes of Next Gen. But "Wounded Sky" had such a sense of wonder about it. I guess it goes back to you're not limited to what you can imagine with the printed word like you are on screen.

And some comics, and the text-based computer game, "The Kobayashi Alternative". Although the comic tried to give him eyes, which made him look a little bit Tholian. ;)

First Minister Asarem from DS9 is very interesting. She started out as an antagonist (to Kira anyway) on Shakaar's orders, before coming into her own. I think she'll be the one to carry on Bacco's legacy (she met with the Romulan praetor after Bacco's death)

And Captain Khatassi she's a great Captain.

If you mean Atish Khatami, I agree, and would also add her to my list.

Ooh, you've just reminded me of another one: Gell Kamemor.

The list is much too long to include here... but if I tried to limit myself to a top 3, it would likely be something like this:
  1. Nan Bacco
  2. Elias Vaughn
  3. Wol
The top 10 would likely further consist of Shar, Taran'atar, Treir, Domenica Corsi, Christine Vale, Liam O'Donnell and Shucorion.

Vale from the last few novels is also a good pick. I can't believe I forgot about Nan Bacco!! :D

Taran'Atar, also one I forgot.... How stupid.

Ruanek from the "Vulcan's Noun" novels

Was he the one that interacted with McCoy in "Vulcan's Forge"?

Edit: I was reading some summaries of older novels on Memory Beta. I liked Daniel Corrigan as an original character as well. From "The Vulcan Academy Murders" and "The IDIC Epidemic".

I love threads like this - they always bring back great memories!

Since I've read the books more than I've watched the TV shows, I'm never entirely sure who's been on TV and who hasn't :)

But a vote for Kebron from New Frontier, the pathfinders from Memory Prime, and also Captain Gold (I think that was his name) from SCE.

I just started reading Greater than the Sum of the Whole. And I have decided that T'Ryssa Chen is my new favorite character. A real breath of fresh air.

I can't believe I forgot Bacco, Taran'atar, and Kamemor. They definitely go on the list too. I'd been hoping the books would deal with the Tamarians for while, so I'm thrilled we've gotten Sharak in Kirsten Beyer's Voy. books.
I love the whole New Frontier cast. I probably wouldn't have made it through all of the books up to The Return if I didn't love them all so much.
