Favorite "Obscure" Sci-Fi Movies?

Hmmmmm.......Obscure Sci Fi Films:

The PBS Broadcast 1980 version of "Lathe of Heaven" It looks pretty cheap in some ways (laughably so in some parts) but you get what they were trying to do, It's excellently acted overall though. and the story is pretty damn good, I recommend this one, (You need to be in the mind for a slow burn, high concept type film with little action) Based on a book of the same name by Ursula K Le Guin, I recommend watching this at least once, DVD is expensive now (Long out of print), but it is on YouTube as of this writing.

1999's "Supernova" while not the best script is a visual guilty pleasure and I really like the concept the film is based on.

1980's animated film "Starchaser: The Legend of Orin" some interesting Rotoscoping/early cgi animation, a borderline shameless Star Wars rip off but a fun one! I recently rewatched this and while there were a couple of cringe parts it was still surprisingly decent.

1984 film "Explorers" plot is decent for what it is, pretty good score in parts by Goldsmith, I think this one's obscure by now, loved it as a Lad, and still as an Adult, it takes me back every time I watch it, I swear I can almost feel my M.A.S.K. toy's sitiing next to me on the living room floor as a kid whenever it's on.

1970's film called "Silent Running" Soundtrack is a little cheesy now, and some would say it's a bunch of 70's "Hippy-Dippy B.S." and maybe it is, but the arch the main character goes through is worth the watch.

1984 film "2010: the year we make contact" I'm not sure if this is obscure, maybe more like buried, I know even as a kid this film bombed when it came out, I personally actually liked it (Quite a bit, even as a kid, it was a more accessible visit to the 2001 universe.) Has some heavy hitters in the cast (Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, Roy Scheider) a pretty creepy synth score, and some of the shot's of Juptier are still achingly beautiful, I think this one is more accepted now among cult fans.

Supernova's the James Spader/Angela Bassett one isn't it? I remember getting it from woolies on dvd years back.
Silent Running was also a regular and I enjoyed 2010

Many others have already pointed out in this thread how arguably 'Forbidden Planet' isn't obscure and was 'remade' in the form of 'Star Trek' much more eloquently than I could so I'll just give you my favourite obscure Sci-Fi film - 'The Final Countdown' :techman::techman:. It got me interested in naval aviation (aided and abetted by 'Top Gun').
The ending of The Final Countdown was a humongous, colossal cop-out. It was a great recruiting film for the Navy, though.

Agree, Silent Running(1972).

These are a little obscure movies! (I liked Europa report!)
Europa Report was really good.
Virtual Nightmare
Dark City
The Prestige (my favourite movie of all-time, and counts because it has [spoiler you'll know if you've seen it])
Super Mario Brothers (YES.)
Zardoz (FUCK YES.)
I loved the Super Mario Bros. movie as I kid, but I don't know how I'd feel about it now.
I just watched Zardoz for the first time earlier this year, and that is one seriously weird movie. I enjoyed it, but it was probably one of the strangest movies I've seen.

I really like 2010, and I feel kind of bad that it is so overshadowed by 2001. It is a very different style of movie from it's predecesor, but it's still good.
One movie that I love that I think might be considered obscure is Titan A.E.
One of my absolute favorites that is right on the borderline is The Dark Crystal, I love love love this movie, but it seems like most people I run into have never heard of it. It does apparently have some fans since there's been a ton of merchandise released for it recently, but I've never run into any who aren't related to me.

Hangar 18. Top film. Always wondered what the other buttons did.

Saturn 3 is kind of obscure. Not seen it for years though. Morons from Outer Space must get a honorable mention, Mel Smith sadly missed.

I really liked 2010 too.

I loved Explorers when I was a kid.

I remember loving the ending as a kid (thinking it was funny, etc.) Then reading a posts here or there as an Adult of people ripping on the movie for the Ending (Basically saying the Aliens were dumb) and even one post I remember saying the Aliens should have been more like the "Seraph's" from the original Battlestar Galactica. But even as an Adult I thought the ending was fine, I mean the aliens were just basically trying to be what they thought we thought they would be like, which kinda adds an extra layer to the whole thing and made me love it a little more as an adult.

I've always had a soft spot for the first Trancers movie. I would say that's a pretty obscure sci fi film.

'Dry hair is for squids'

I LOVE Tim Thomerson in this movie. Also notable for a very young Helen Hunt in a prominent role.

Another one I'd add to the list is 'Runaway' with Tom Selleck, Kirstie Alley, featuring a particularly villainous turn by none other than Gene Simmons. Dated but still an entertaining flick.

I forgot all about 'Hanger 18'. It's a good film which I rewatched maybe eighteen months ago. I first saw it one weekday afternoon in the autumn of 1990. The special effects in the space shuttle scenes at the beginning were a little ropey and the impact of an astronaut dying in space on the news media seemed a little low key even for 1980, but nevertheless a cracking little thriller about UFO cover-ups that preceded 'The X-Files' by more than a dozen years. In the same vein may I suggest 'The Disappearance of Flight 412' starring Glenn Ford and David Soul. I only saw this once but I enjoyed it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071426/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_24

I wouldn't call it quite a cop-out. It would have been nice to watch them blow the Japanese armada away but that would have caused complications. I believe that a couple of computer games out there do deal with this. One is a strategy game from the mid 90s about the Pacific war.
I don't know if this film is sci-fi but I mentioned it tongue-in-cheek a couple of weeks ago over on the North Korea thread in the Neutral Zone: 'Megaforce'. I love the film, cheesier than anything churned out of any dairy anywhere on Earth . The second half of the second trailer below is a parody playing up unintended(?) homo-erotic elements in the film.

And here's Rifftrax's take on it - my sides still hurt from laughing:

OMG, I remember this one from the summer of 1982. I was working in small towns that summer, w/ no movie theaters except for one week. The team I was working with went crazy, seeing as many movies as we could that week -- Wrath of Khan, Annie, and... MegaForce. With Persis Khambata and Barry Bostwick. More cheese than Wisconsin. But after all these years, I still remember the line, "Remember, Duke, the good guys always win... even in the 80s." Ridiculous fun!

I remember cutting the full page ad for this film out of a comic book and hanging it in my room as a poster, I thought the film looked so Badass, I had the little hotwheel of the buggy.....But, I never got to see the film.

Its available on DVD and I don't think its too expensive. I believe it comes in two versions, which differ by profanity content. I've got the 'cleaner' one for no reason other than it had the full page ad you referenced in your post was the cover.
