Favorite NES game?

I imagine we have some retro gamers on this board.
I'll just say the NES was a powerful force in my childhood (I'm young, but wasn't granted a SNES for many years) and I still love classic gaming. been playing recently, and wondering what you guys think.

so what are you favorite NES games? do your list however......I've always liked five in any order

1. Contra -This and Super Contra are among the height of multiplayer. Even today you can play this with a friend and have a total blast. This is the greatest platform shooter ever. oh and don't forget up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start

2. Legend of Zelda - this one gets talked to death, but it earns all the praise it recieves. This game can be really challanging, particulary when I played as a kid without the map. It still takes me a good hour to navigate the final dungeon.

3. Punch-Out - This was my favorite game growing up, and I'm still very fond it, the only problem is I have all the patterns memorized so I win most of the matches in the first round. Still, amazing game

4. Megaman II - Tough to pick a single megaman entry, but I like this one best......megaman is just badass. Robot boss battles and mega man. This one also has the cool opening with megaman on some tall building without his helmet

5. Super Mario 3 - best mario game ever. enough said. That hammer bros. suit was awesome, although the racoon suit was much more handy.

honorable mentions to

Blaster Master
River city Ransom
Ninja Gaiden
Ghost and Goblins

Mario 3. It's one of those rare sequels that contains everything that made the original great, plus so much more. It also set up game concepts (re-playable level choices on a map, for example) that nearly every Mario game afterwards would adopt.

Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Blaster Master
Metroid
River City Ransom
The Legend of Zelda
Lifeforce
Contra

1.) Top Secret Episode: Golgo-13
2.) Super Mario Bros. 3
3.) Super Mario Bros.
4.) Track & Field II
5.) Bionic Commando
6.) Rad Racer
7.) Spy Hunter
8.) Duck Hunt
9.) Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
10.) Mega Man 2
11.) Contra
12.) Super C
13.) Life Force
14.) Legend of Zelda
15.) Zelda II: The Adventures of Link

22.) Duck Tales
23.) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
24.) Batman
25.) Ninja Gaiden

...It appears as though my passion for playing and owning NES games back in 1988 has translated into my compulsive hobby of collecting DVDs in the year 2008!

completely agree, I can easily get through the whole game without having to continue once. Super C is a bit harder, but still manageable. Those 3D perspective levels are really interesting as well.

You want hard? Think about all the games you loved on the NES that were arcade ports. Then play the actual arcade versions on Xbox Marketplace, Wii Virtual Console, etc. and see how well you do. The purpose of arcade games were to be quarter-eaters. Contra and Gauntlet, for example, are not as fun as the NES versions.
