Favorite movie scores so far this year?

2009 has been a really interesting year for movie scores so far, in my opinion. As a film score aficionado, I think my favorite film score so far this year has been Clint Mansell's touching and poignant score for Moon, the science-fiction film starring Sam Rockwell. Mansell is no stranger to the genre before, having scored Darren Aronosfky's The Fountain back in 2006, and once again he proves his elegance and drive as a composer.

On the other end of the science-fiction spectrum, I was also really impressed by Michael Giacchino's score for Star Trek. Giacchino is one of my favorite composers, and with his resume building with such great scores as The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible III and Speed Racer, Giacchino is on the fast track to being one of the most sought after and aggressively talented composers out there today.

Other scores that really impressed me were Hans Zimmer's thrilling Angels & Demons score and even Danny Elfman managed to do a pretty good job outside of his proverbial style with his score for Terminator Salvation, which is much maligned on here, as well as with the film. Alexander Desplat's score for Cherie, directed by Stephen Frears, was extremely enchanting, and I guarantee you Desplat, an Oscar favorite, will receive another nomination for his score here.

What about everyone else?

I have to second the nod to Moon and Star Trek, I thought both of those scores were fantastic.

I'll also add another Giacchino score: Up. The main motif was simple, but it was used to an incredibly poigant and touching effect.

EDIT: Posted this yesterday, and just realized I manged to misspell "Up". :wtf:

Definitely Clint Mansell's Moon.....and though they are not a movies, Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica season 4 and Michael Giacchino's Lost season 4 have to be the best instrumental soundtracks I've heard in 2009.

Star Trek and Angels & Demons most definitely. The last one is immensely thrilling and also very ethereal in places. I also liked the score for Watchmen a great deal.

The only movies I've even seen this year are Transformers 2 and Star Trek, and they also happen to have great soundtracks!

I really, really like Half-Blood Prince's score. But you have to listen to the CD to fully appreciate it, as for some reason, in the movie they replaced some of the music featured on the OST with stuff from OOTP.

My particular favorites are "In Noctem," "Wizard Wheezes," and the "Weasley Stomp."

I also quite enjoyed the music for Star Trek; really helped bring the right emotions to the forefront (that very first battle scene in the movie was just beautiful with that musical score).

I greatly enjoyed the Half-Blood Prince score too, even though I think I prefer Nicholas Hooper's Order of the Phoenix score a tad better.

"Wizard Wheezes" is definitely my favorite track on the album. Like "Fireworks" for his OotP score, Hooper manages to do something really out of the ordinary and truly exciting. Just like he went out of the box with the electric guitar in "Fireworks", Hooper mixes some really fantastic 30's jazz motifs for "Wizard Wheezes". It was pretty impressive.

Sadly, I can't name any thus far. There was a time during the 80's where hardly a month could pass by without finding something great & new.

Oh, forgot that I also love "Aragog's Farewell" on the HBP soundtrack... Beautiful, haunting Celtic music. Oh, what a sucker I am for that stuff.

Let's see...in no particular order

-Star Trek
-Angels and Demons
-Moon
-Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
-Race to Witch Mountain
-Battlestar Galactica Season Four (non movie)

Star Trek XI's score. I liked it so much I bought it well before I went to see the movie (opening day), and didn't play it until after I saw the movie.
