2009 has been a really interesting year for movie scores so far, in my opinion. As a film score aficionado, I think my favorite film score so far this year has been Clint Mansell's touching and poignant score for Moon, the science-fiction film starring Sam Rockwell. Mansell is no stranger to the genre before, having scored Darren Aronosfky's The Fountain back in 2006, and once again he proves his elegance and drive as a composer.
On the other end of the science-fiction spectrum, I was also really impressed by Michael Giacchino's score for Star Trek. Giacchino is one of my favorite composers, and with his resume building with such great scores as The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible III and Speed Racer, Giacchino is on the fast track to being one of the most sought after and aggressively talented composers out there today.
Other scores that really impressed me were Hans Zimmer's thrilling Angels & Demons score and even Danny Elfman managed to do a pretty good job outside of his proverbial style with his score for Terminator Salvation, which is much maligned on here, as well as with the film. Alexander Desplat's score for Cherie, directed by Stephen Frears, was extremely enchanting, and I guarantee you Desplat, an Oscar favorite, will receive another nomination for his score here.
What about everyone else?
