Indeed, they're either themes or compositions really.

And the only song I can think he's done.

I don't really have a favorite. The man writes so much great stuff it's hard to single anything out.

I'm with you. I don't like ranking stuff I like. Don't waste time and effort comparing in order to find flaws so one can be "better" than the others. Just listen and enjoy.

Superman The Movie- Prelude and Main Title March
Star Wars- The Phantom Menace- Duel of the Fates
Superman The Movie- The Planet Krypton
Raiders of the Lost Ark- The Map Room: Dawn
Star Wars- A New Hope- Binary Sunset
    Harry Potter- Main Theme
    Space Camp- Main Title
    Home Alone- Main Theme
Solo: A Star Wars Story- The Adventures of Han

I’ve tried not to be too Star Wars heavy but that’s not easy to do! Solo is late entry for me, I really liked the theme Williams came up with and I thought John Powell did an excellent job mixing that into the rest of the film. Maybe I’ll be less keen on it with time, but at the moment it’s a real favourite.

"When You're Alone" from Hook is a song. The little girl sang it (and the then child actress sang it at the Oscars. It got beat by "Beauty and the Beast" from guess which film)

Wasn't "Hook" shot as a musical, and only in editing they decided to remove all the songs?! If that's the case (and my memory isn't playing tricks on me), then Williams probably wrote several songs for that movie that we never heard.

According to Wikipedia, this idea was long before the movie went into production:

Thanks for clearing that up. If that was an early stage approach with Michael Jackson, Williams probably wouldn't have been involved in the writing of the songs even if this version got made.

This thread needs more Hans Zimmer:p

    Main Theme - Jurassic Park
March - Raiders of The Lost Ark
Dry Your Tears, Afrika - Amistad
    Hedwigs Theme - Harry Potter
    Olympic Fanfare
    Main Theme - Schindlers List
    Storm - Dracula
Duel Of The Fates - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
The Conversation Begins - Encounters of The Third Kind
Battle of the Heroes - Star Wars: Revenge of The Sith
The Towering Inferno - The Towering Inferno

My least favourite is anything from The Cowboys - just don't connect with that at all.

I could see them agreeing on Quincy Jones, if he'd have been willing, though from his account, scoring The Color Purple was a huge undertaking for him

Anyway, I've always had a soft spot for the Skywalker theme. Sad, sullen, melancholy. It really stands in stark opposition to the other more exciting march type stuff he is heralded for. It IS the Star Wars music I reflect on as the center of it, above all others

I agree. I have always loved John Williams work but it is really his softer moments that are standout for me. I remember watching Jurassic Park and thinking toward the end of the film that there wasn't really a theme that stood out for me, and then we got to the closing theme and it was beautiful.

He does have one ballad type theme I liked from that one too. It's no Skywalker piece, but it is very nice. All in all, the Schindler's List music has it by a mile though
