Favorite James Bond song.

^^And so was/is she!

As the 70's wore on, I think the music got softer, more fitting Moore's Bond, who was a lover who could kick your ass with a JUDO CHOP!.. Whereas Connery's Bond was a lean, mean fighting machine who would just as soon punch you in the mouth as kiss you and so even the "softer" songs had an edge..

*Yes, Marillion, we get it.. You don't like Moore's Bond*

One of these days I am going to have to redraft my 'Rog was more vicious than Connery because it was so unexpected when he did it that it caught you off guard' article... :)

What song is your favorite from the Bond films. I'm not referring to scores, but songs written and sung for the movies.

Mine is Nobody Does It Better.

But I do really like Goldfinger, Live and Let Die and For Your Eyes Only (Which almost ties with Nobody Does It Better.).

So give it up, which is your favorite.

Has there been a CD with all the Bond songs on it?

Love this topic. I used to own the greatest hits on vinyl. The one with Bond '77 on it? Anyone know that? Very similar to a Bee Gees disco tune.

Live and Let Die!:techman: (the best---nice cover choice GNR)

Nobody Does It Better (can you say ski pole gun and Union Jack Parachute?)
For Your Eyes Only (haunting sounds---brings me back)
A View To A Kill (love it---)
Thunderball (Matt Monroe, not Tom Jones---right?)
Moonraker (love the haunting sound----"Where are you.....la da da da)

Which is why I like Craig's Bond...not only does he hark back to Connery's Bond, he evokes the Bond of the books...Bond is not a funny man. He is a cold-blooded killer, only he works for the good guys.

As an aside, trivia time...how many times has George Lazenby played James Bond...?

He's played James Bond once.

He played a man named "JB" once in The Return of the Man from UNCLE though ;)

Cannot be stated enough. For me, there really are no real "Bonds" between Connery and Craig.
Does "Secret Agent Man" count?

Of course not!

It's obviously Bond-inspired (even has the Bond theme in it). :)

It does? I can assure you the Johnny Rivers original has no Bond themes in it.
I'm not exactly sure of what you mean by "the Johnny River's original", but the version that was always played on the radio and the version I've seen him perform on T.V. definitely has the signature 4 note Bond theme riff in it. It's played at the end of each chorus, right after "they've given you a number and taken 'way your name". I'm too lazy to post a link.

^ Yep. The main guitar riff from Secret Agent Man (the Johnny Rivers original, the Blues Traveler remake, and any others that might be out there) is taken directly from the original Bond theme.

I didn't know Blues Traveler covered the song. I'll have to look for it. I was a pretty big Johnny Rivers fan back in the day. A solid singer, guitarist, and overall performer.

Ding! Give the Admiral a Marvel No-Prize!

It's pretty heavily implied who "JB" is supposed to be...right down to the Goldfinger Astin-Martin...

The ironic part of James Bond being in a "Man From UNCLE" story? Ian Fleming gave Napoleon Solo his name.

One of the bands I'm in plays "Secret Agent Man" almost every gig. Trying to get the band I play more often with to do it too.

Mm-hmm! While the Bond of the books does have a wry sense of humor (which Craig displays, quite nicely)--he's not nearly the joker most of the film versions of him make him out to be.

The Bond of the books is more emotionally affected by the events of the mission--though he makes sure to keep it internal. (At times, Pierce Brosnan showed this--and I give him a lot of credit for that. Still...Craig shows it the best.)

He gets more bitter and angry--again, internally, but it is there. (Timothy Dalton could do this--but again, Craig shows faithfulness to this in spades.)

And finally, the Bond of the books, when interacting with the "Bond Girls", comes to form emotional connections with them--the relationships, while certainly glamorous, are much more intimate and personal than in most of the pre-Craig movies.

Once.

I must say, while OHMSS was for the most part a great Bond film...I wasn't too impressed with Lazenby. He seemed to be a bit too flippant. At least Moore (in his earlier films, anyway) balanced the comedy with taking things--and himself--seriously (particularly in TSWLM--the moment when he gets bitter at Anya for bringing up his late wife was very well acted).

No...Lazenby seemed to fill his interpretation of Bond with an air of "I'm not taking any of this that seriously." I'd have to call him my least favorite Bond...and wish Sean Connery had been available/willing to do that film.

OK, I wasn't thinking of the four note figure as a "theme," but you're right, they're there in both, I stand corrected. Thanks,

Justin

You Only Live Twice is my favorite theme song. the one i absolutely can't stand is Die Another Day.

It's not "directly."

While it's certainly inspired and derivative, the key is different as is the meter and phrasing.

And it's (obviously) hardly a Norman original. He says he was inspired by "Good Sign, Bad Sign", and that's definitely true, but the VI#-VII-I chromatic riff is pretty ubiquitous.

And since we're on the subject, might I add, that 4 note riff is one of the coolest pieces of movie music, ever.

Probably my favorite usage of it was in Goldfinger -- when Bond surprises Jill Masterson (or her sister, can't remember which) on the hotel balcony helping Auric cheat at cards. She turns and asks, "who are you?" and he replies (looking at what she is doing rather than at her) with the ubiquitous, "Bond, James Bond". The 4 note riff rises menacingly in the background and then fades.

The first time I saw this I was mesmerized.

All The Time In The World (from OHMSS) I always thought that this would make a good Bond song: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucdnm8iU-5c[/yt]

He played a man named "JB" once in The Return of the Man from UNCLE though ;)

Which came out in 1983, the same year that you could have seen both Connery and Moore play 007 in cinemas (NSNA and Octopussy).

On topic, I'd say Nobody Does It Better, All The Time in The World, Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger head my list.

My least fave is Die Another Day, even though I'm in the minority who actually likes that movie.

I like most of it, it goes downhill once they get on the Antonov at the end.

Terrible song though, though the tune is better than Madge's cameo.
