I know what the word "utilitarian" means...
Doors are less likely to breakdown than the guns. If the guns are on the outside, then them breaking down becomes a major issue. And there weren't originally windows on the Enterprise. That was done at Roddenberry's request.

Frankly, anything in the outside is dressing... pure and simple.

Again, the history of design of even todays war ships shows that they have fewer visible weapons on the outside of them compared to years past... and yet they are far more deadly.

You point out a finite number of missile bays... why can you make them out on the surface at all? You shouldn't be able to. The fact that you can see them is so you can see them. There were no visible weapons on the Enterprise... but it had them none the less.

As for paint... what paint? The color of the Enterprise is the material it is made of. Beyond the hull markings, you get what you get.

If you want to read more into what is there than actually is, that is fine... what I see in that ship you posted is a bad copy of the TOS Galatica with elements from the Nostromo and Sulaco. It is painfully... PAINFULLY, derivative work. And totally uninspired.

I don't care if you like the Enterprise or not (actually, I'm relieved you don't :techman: ), but at least show some initiative to find a decent example ship of what you do like that isn't a hack. Something original (maybe even one of the ones that that one stoled ideas from).

As for your understanding of utilitarian... you said:
"The latest model does a much better job of looking pretty and fast."
Looking pretty or fast was not what the original Enterprise was meant to do. In fact, the swept aspects of the TMP Enterprise are what is wrong with that design. But attempting to look either pretty or fast (or heavily armed for that matter) are all far outside of utilitarian. If a design is intended to invoke something like that, it wasn't utilitarian.

I see this with designers all the time these days... they are practically phobic about blank areas. And designers of scifi spaceships these days are the worst about this.

I don't expect you to understand any of those points... in fact, I hope you disagree with all of them (you should stand behind your ideas, no matter how misguided they might seem to me).
Like most fanboys, when intelligent debate fails... insult the other person's taste and intelligence. DiSiLLUSiON gave reasons for his vote, you gave insults.

I voted for the new NCC-1701. I prefer it because one may drive a 1965 VW Beetle because it functions, but a Porsche is preferred because it works great AND is beautiful!

Funny... I thought I was voicing support for him putting forward his opinion even if I disagreed. I would have preferred if he had picked a better ship to make his points though.

And his first post was a reply to my expressing my reasons for my vote... I didn't pick on him (nor do I think anyone actually could pick on him  ).

But hey, if attempting to insult me makes you feel a little better in your daily life, be my guest (I'm guessing their aren't many windmills where you live). :techman:

^Who needs windmills when the internet is full of rude people throwing insults? If it makes you feel better in your daily life, feel free to move your rude comments to me. Nevermind, I see you already have.

Funny! :guffaw:

But just how did I insult you? Did I call you names (like you did me)?

It looks like you are looking for a fight... and I don't know anything about you (other than your first post directed at me), so it seems rather one sided.

So out of curiosity... what was it I said that you felt insulted DiSiLLUSiON's intelligence and taste? Or was insulting at all for that matter? Or even rude?

Be specific.

Frankly, I think you are more insulting to DiSiLLUSiON than I could possibly be. You seem to hold a much lower opinion of him than I do.

Aside from that, happy posting :)

While I'm not completely happy with it (mainly the too-small and tapered stardrive section), I find the AU Enterprise to be an overall improvement over both the original and the refit.

I have a hard time choosing between the original and the refit. On the one hand the original ship has a simplistic yet well-thought out beauty to it, but on the other hand the refit is a work of art. Probably the refit by a hair.

Refit. Elegance incarnated.

The original one is like an old beloved aunt, you love her because she took care of you and was nice to you, but if you exclude any emotional attachment, you can see that she doesn't look so good as she looked some decades ago.

I like the new one: she is cool, muscular and powerful, but she lacks some grace. It may still grow on me, tho.

I went for the refit and TOS as a close second. Had there been some slight differences to the nu Enterprise, I might have chosen that one. As it stands now, the design just looks a bit off to me.
