Favorite Guest Captains

Red Ranger

Admiral
In Memoriam
People,

In TNG, there were a number of guest stars who were Starfleet Captains, and if I remember correctly, there were more of them than guest starship commanders on TOS.

Who are your favorites of this group of specific guest stars? And which ones would you have liked to see more of either in TNG, DSN, or VOY?

Of course, the two best have to be Edward Jellico, captain of the Cairo and briefly, the Enterprise, from "Chain of Command, Pts. I & II," and Ben Maxwell, the renegade captain of the Phoenix from "The Wounded."

Although we only saw them briefly, I always wanted to see Captain Rixx and Captain Tryla Scott return in a future ep.

Who do you like? Dislike? See return?

Well, let's see. Worf captained the Defiant a few times on DS9 and even against the Borg in First Contact, not to mention an Alliance Bird-of-Prey in the mirror universe. :klingon:

And how about Dukat? :cardie:

Oh, and Data had a short-lived but successful captaincy on TNG.

Captain Garrett. I thought she kicked ass in the brief moments we saw her. Captain Durgo. For purely sentimental reasons. :)

I would also have liked to see Rixx and Tryla Scott return in an episode.

Another appearance from Captain DeSoto would have been good as well - he was obviously a pretty renowned captain from references in DS9.

I have a feeling this will become the popular/contoversial vote, but I have to say Jellico. The man was, by far, the most well-developed, charismatic, controversial guest captain we've seen.

I'd have to say Capt. Garrett of the Enterprise C. Does Okona count? I hated Jelico.

I always thought Tryla Scott was dead. The story didn't mention whether she survived her possession. I assumed she died. She couldn't have had much of a career after been possessed and destroyed a starship.

What references were there? I'm interested to know.

In 'Treachery, Faith and the Great River' Nog ships Sisko's desk off to some engineer who likes being photographed behind desks of famous captains. DeSoto is mentioned in that.

I'm sure there was another mention, but it's not coming to mind right now. I think the Hood was used by the producers to help destroy the Chintoka control system, although that's a ship reference rather than captain.

Well, it's true that it was never made clear if possessed officers survived or not. For purposes of reappearance, I'd hope she was alive.

I doubt they'd hold possession against her - it did infiltrate the highest ranks of Starfleet. Picard was never overtly officially punished for being assimilated by the Borg, not until after he failed to implant the virus into them anyway.

She never destroyed a starship - unless you're thinking she was responsible for the Horatio? I always felt the implication was that that was an internal issue in-line with Keel's mentions of doubts about his first officer.

Admiral Quinn survived posession, by extension, the other Starfleet personnel Riker and Picard probably survived as well... except for Remmick, obviously. It's ambiguous though.

I've got to go with Captain Benjamin Maxwell of the Prometheus; O'Brien's old commander who goes renegade against the Cardassians. "It smells musty in here... like a bureaucrat's office!"

although her appearance was brief, I always wanted to see more of captain Benteen. Data was also really good as a captain, i always wanted to see him in the captains seat again.
Are we including ENT guest captains? If we are, I would definitely add captain Hernandez to the list.

As it's the TNG forum, I'd say by definition no. But yes if this were a GenTrek or ENT forum thread. ;) Should one expand it to that level, I shall note my fondness for Captain Keogh.

Kegek,

I liked Maxwell, too. What's not to like? He was portrayed by Bob Gunton, who's played such characters as the evil warden in "The Shawshank Redemption," and did a turn on Broadway as the lead character in the musical, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."

But his ship was the Nebula-class U.S.S. Phoenix. The Prometheus was the prototype ship that could split into

three parts from the VOY ep, "Message in a Bottle."

I forgot about DeSoto, who we finally saw in "Tin Man." And while I was thinking primarily of Starfleet captains, I liked some of the Klingon captains, too, like Kargon from "A Matter of Honor." And who could forget the Tamarian Captain Dathon, from "Darmok," played by Paul Winfield?

BTW, I am going to post a similar topic in the GenTrek area, so those of you who'd like to weigh in on guest starship commanders in other series, hop over there.

Oh, yes, I'd forgotten that, thank you! :)

Here's Captain Durgo in a position reminiscent of someone else we know well (depending upon your age!)

Actually, Red Ranger, I had confused the Phoenix with a different Prometheus, a Nebula-class starship from DS9.

If we expand beyond Starfleet captains... then Dathon, the Tamarian captain, is my pick. :)

OK, didn't know there was another Prometheus from DSN. Makes sense, as he's a popular character from Greek mythology. And I agree, Dathon was way cool. How he sacrifices himself and potentially his ship just for the hope of communicating with Picard and co. gives him a unique kind of bravery. -- RR
