Hmm, let's see (in no particular order):

- Monty Python's Flying Circus
- Blackadder
- Fawlty Towers
- Red Dwarf
- Scrubs
- The Simpsons
- Futurama
- Sledge Hammer

And one I remember liking a lot when it was on but haven't seen in ages (so I'm not sure I'd still like it): KYTV

Hmm, that's all I can think of right now.

By the way, I'm having a hard time placing a sketch I remember seeing years ago which I thought was pretty funny. I'm curious to know if anyone can place this:

A police officer comes into his superiors office (he's obviously been summoned). Anyway, his superior brings up an issue or a misunderstanding that seems to have existed within the police force for some time now. As a consequence, he explains, the "drug squad" will be renamed "anti-drug squad", the "theft squad" will be renamed "anti-theft squad" and so on.

Any ideas where this is from?

My favorite comedies tend to be British

Red Dwarf
Father Ted
The Vicar of Dibley
Steptoe and Son
The Goodies
Fawlty Towers

and Australian

Full Frontal
Fast Forward
Frontline
The Games

The American comedy I like the most is F Troop (I have just bought both season of it and enjoying it after having seeing it on TV for more than 20 years)

And Her Majesty's subjects think we Americans have no taste?:wtf:
Seriously, F Troop? We may have created it but I don't know anyone who would admit to watching it voluntarily. I don't get it-you are obviously smart enough to form complete sentences and spell correctly-F Troop?

I loved F Troop as a child back in the 1960s and have enjoyed watching it again. I have been amazed how well I have remembered most of the episodes.

It rates 7.3 over at IMDB so there must be many people who still enjoy it.

Friends
Newhart
Hogan's Heroes
Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.
The Andy Griffith Show
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Dick Van Dyke Show
I Love Lucy

Well there are a few second-tier comedies that I have enjoyed and find watchable, such as Seinfeld or Reba, but I'll stick to the ones I really love:

Arrested Development
Friends
Big Bang Theory
The Office

The Goodies
Fawlty Towers
Steptoe And Son
Only Fools And Horses
Sledge Hammer
Third Rock From The Sun
Father Ted
Spaced
Black Books
Time Gentlemen Please
Still Game

some of those shows I have never even heard of...are they american???

Rob

No, they're funny.
Third Rock From The Sun is an American show. It's also on my list:

The Golden Girls
Frasier
Spaced
Black Books
I Love Lucy/The Lucy and Desi Comedy Hour
The Dick Van Dyke Show

Probably my all-time favorite sitcom is Barney Miller. (M*A*S*H is great, but as a couple other people have noted, it's more of a dramedy.) I have the first three seasons in DVD and I can't wait to get them all. It's held up really well, too.

I am also extremely fond of Keeping Up Appearances and Fawlty Towers. Love 'em love 'em love 'em.

And then there's another show that I don't think anybody's mentioned yet - The Red Green Show. It's a Canadian show (shown in the U.S. on PBS stations), for those of you who haven't heard of it, and it's hilarious. I am gradually collecting as many seasons as I can (I think there were 15 in all - something like that), and one of my little rituals is to watch an episode or two every Saturday.

My favorite comedy on the air right now is Chuck.

Of all time: The Simpsons. Tho I got sick of it years ago...

Futurama is another favorite - and I have to mention The Honeymooners since I don't see it listed so far.

Easily Seinfeld and Frasier. :techman:

I usually don't defend my shows this hard. To me people can and should have different opinions. Still, I wouldn't object to people being sent to Gitmo for not thinking "Mystery Science Theater 300" isn't the greatest tv show in human hisotry. :)

My other favorite comedies would be Seinfeld,Joss Whedon shows, Reaper,Eastbound and Down,South PArk,Simpsons,Family Guy, Beavis and Butthead,Daria and Roseanne(except for the crappy later seasons).

Jason

Seinfeld... Arrested Development... Red Dwarf... South Park... Family Guy... 30 Rock... Office USA... Futurama... too many to remember! But Seinfeld is the brass ring, and Arrested is the dark horse winner.

Seinfeld
Night Court
30 Rock
Cheers
Family Ties(was classified as a comedy:))
The Cosby Show(earlier episodes for sure)

Definitely votes for almost all the ones previously listed(can't say all since I haven't seen all of them:p)

And I am sure I left some out....

Seinfeld
Night Court
I've always hated Seinfeld, bu I loved Night Court when I was a kid -- I must've been only eight or nine. I remember an episode in which a couple was charged with lewdness or indecency or something, for having really loud sex. When they entered the courtroom we saw that they were an elderly couple. The studio audience burst out laughing and I remember asking my mother, "What's funny about old people having sex?"
Family Ties(was classified as a comedy:))
The Cosby Show(earlier episodes for sure)
These are good ones too! And I completely forgot to put Futurama on my list!

There is no one show, but among the best I have seen:

"M*A*S*H"
"Scrubs"
"Seinfeld"
"Frasier"
"Red Dwarf"
"Futurama"
"The Norm Show"
"Newsradio"
"The Fresh Prince of Bel Air"
"South Park"
"The Simpsons"
(first six seasons)

A step down, but still funny:
"ALF"
"Night court"
"Are You Being Served?"
"Major Dad"
"Family Matters"
"Friends"
"The Red Green Show"
"Reno: 911!"
"Perfect Strangers"
