Clearly. But your comment implies that being American and being funny are mutually exclusive -- an idea not supported by your own list -- that's what I was pointing out.

Probably my all-time favorite sitcom is Barney Miller. (M*A*S*H is great, but as a couple other people have noted, it's more of a dramedy.) I have the first three seasons in DVD and I can't wait to get them all. It's held up really well, too.

I am also extremely fond of Keeping Up Appearances and Fawlty Towers. Love 'em love 'em love 'em.

And then there's another show that I don't think anybody's mentioned yet - The Red Green Show. It's a Canadian show (shown in the U.S. on PBS stations), for those of you who haven't heard of it, and it's hilarious. I am gradually collecting as many seasons as I can (I think there were 15 in all - something like that), and one of my little rituals is to watch an episode or two every Saturday.

"If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

"This is the part of the show that we call, If it's not broken, you're not trying."

The Red Green Show is pure genius.
