but what the hell is the first officer doing with a chair? Arguably, the XO is the busiest officer on the ship - they shouldn't even GET a seat.

Indeed, IMO the XO shouldn't even be on the bridge at the same time as the captain unless it's for a very specific purpose, especially on the larger ships. Nor should the captain be on the bridge at all times either (though TOS and DS9 (on Defiant) were the worst for this, we have "sea cabins" (command deck level quarters/office, equivalent of the "ready room") for COs currently there's no reason for their absense in the future.

My top five, in no particular order:

U.S.S. Enterprise (TOS)
U.S.S. Enterprise-A (TUC)
U.S.S. Enterprise-D (GEN)
U.S.S. Defiant (DS9)
U.S.S. Odyssey (DS9)

Enterprise A and Excelsior from TUC. Voyager also.

Picard's ready room on the Enterprise E does have a bed in it, or at least it did in First Contact, making it probably the closest to a sea cabin we've seen in all Star Trek.

Well I always like the later bridges is because they had a chair for the first officer. Because I always thought it was weird that even on the big ships the first officer have to double up with another job .

I'd have to say the Kelvin.

If we see the bridge of the Enterprise in DSC season 2, and it looks like this (which it can, since the Kelvin also exists in the prime timeline), it would be fine with me.

Some of those other bridges bugged me a bit though. Voyager, especially, with those dual command chairs - not only does it just look wrong to have anything other than one, central command chair, but what the hell is the first officer doing with a chair? Arguably, the XO is the busiest officer on the ship - they shouldn't even GET a seat.

And the bridge of the Enterprise-C as seen in "Yesterday's Enterprise" looked way, way too small and threadbare. Definitely not a bridge that's worthy of an Enterprise. Perhaps that was its battle bridge?
He is the first officer. I think that warrants a seat. I mean he should have to do another job just to be on the bridge

Although modern naval bridges do have separate seats on the bridge for the CO and XO, as already noted, the two are rarely if ever on the bridge at the same time. Even during a battle, the XO is supposed to go to the CIC or an auxiliary control room (like the battle bridge on the D) and take command there. That way, if the bridge is critically damaged, they can take control of the ship in the Aux Con or CIC and there's still an experienced officer on hand to take command of the ship.

It's kind of disappointing the battle bridge was only used during saucer separations on TNG. Even if they weren't going to have Riker head down there every time there was a red alert, they should at least have gone there whenever the bridge had to be evacuated as opposed to engineering.

But remember, to quote Picard : “starfleet is not a military organization” now while I don’t believe that was the case in later series, it is in most of TNG

And on a personal note. I do believe that starfleet is a military organization. Or at the very least, partly.

Star Trek =/= today's navy. It's a space adventure agency very, very loosely inspired by the navy. Where all the important things happen during alpha shift and it takes them 100 years to realise sending the captain on away missions may be a bad idea

While all these designs look awesome, what's with all those small height differences, why so many plateaus that are one step up or down from the rest?

I'd figure that in a crisis situation, when you have to get from one station to another rapidly, you don't want to stumble because you forgot to step up or down in your hurry....

The Enterprise-A bridge as seen in Star Trek V. I'm still disappointed it was redesigned for VI.

The Golden Gate. Her best appearance was probably in The Voyage Home, but she was certainly no slouch in The Motion Picture or the Abrams movies, either.

;)

I have no intention of starting up That Argument thus forever derailing the thread and likely leading to it being closed. However, Starfleet ships do engage in battle on a regular basis, and it makes absolutely no sense for the two most senior officers to be in the same place during a battle. Especially when that place is one of the more exposed parts of the ship and likely one of the enemy's priority targets. That's why the XO goes to Aux Con or CIC when in battle on modern day warships and I can't imagine that changing in a futuristic space service that regularly engages in combat, even if said service is somehow not a military.

yeah I all ways wonder about that. maybe thats why the enterprise D had ramps
