What's your favorite anniversary episode or movie?

Before anyone asks: Since there was nothing for the 40th Anniversary, I cheated slightly and made "In a Mirror Darkly" the option for that year. 2005, 2006, close enough. ;)

After much dithering, I finally picked The Voyage Home over "Trials and Tribble-ations". The TOS Movies are what drew me in to Star Trek, and I love TVH for its story, design, music, humour, world-building, and of course, our crew! (Although TSFS will always be my favourite).

It was a tough call between "Trials and Tribble-ations" and "First Contact", but had to go with the former as it really felt as though it was paying homage to TOS, fit in with the "Trouble with Tribbles" so well and also managed to tell its own story.

"Tribble-ations" for its supreme technical accomplishment, right down to matching lighting, film grain, and other nuances. Its story ties into the original just about seamlessly too; a lot of care was put into this - even despite the X-Files in-joke and how the "orb of time" flings them light years (if not light decades?) across space.

"Beyond" is second-best. It captured the right feel, even with the 20th century song chucked in, there was a surprising amount of tact and it did the rare thing of actually feeling authentic to the story flow. It was a loose re-do of STID but did everything right. (A rewatch helps since it's risky to put in a destructive space battle in at the start without knowing who they are or why, but they managed to make it work. :bolian:)

"Trials and Tribble-ations" was such a wonderful homage, seamlessly incorporating the "Trouble With Tribbles" footage and storyline into its own plot -- and at least as funny as the original!

That said, "Beyond" was a close second for me, taking advantage of modern technology and a film budget while still capturing a real Trekkian feel. And it made good use of all the core cast, plus interesting newcomer Jay'lah.

I loved TUC when it came out, and I still have affection for it, but I don't think it holds up that well.

Some of it is...really hokey.
It's funny because I feel the same way Trials and Tribble-ations. But, I do agree that there are some bumps for TUC too.

I went with "Unification". I feel as if I have to explain why because there are other choices here that I prefer, but this is why I think it works best as an Anniversary Special:

I think "Unification" brings the two (at the time) generations of Star Trek together and shows what Spock is doing "now" during the TNG Era and gives a tantalizing hint about what happened in the "past" in the upcoming TUC.

It also has interactions between Spock and Picard as well as Spock and Data. Something you normally wouldn't see. But the best part is that Spock is actually an active character instead of someone who other characters are only looking back on. Spock's activities on Romulus still have a ripple of an impact on Star Trek unfolding today.

Wow, I can't seriously be the only vote for First Contact, can I? It was the TNG crew's finest hour at the movies, Jerry Goldsmith was back, the franchise overall was at its apex, and it dealt with the origins of the entire Star Trek mythos in the most incredible way. Not to mention the BORG!!!

I like all of these except "Flashback", but "Tribble-ations" is a clear favorite. I thought they just nailed that. The only problem with it is that these aren't the actual end credits.

I also love it's complete indifference to the time travel mechanics... that tossed off voiceover from Sisko, "while we were doing all of that, Major Kira figured out how to work the Orb Of Time and now here we are..."

Amazingly enough, I'm not a huge fan of many of these productions...but the one major exception is "Trials and Tribbleations"

That was the perfect anniversary gift.
