I thought Data was conceptually a terrible gimmick and the writing for him was one misfire after another - and this was in 1987. No one associated with the show displayed much more understanding of computers or AI than would have been required to reboot their 286. Spiner made the character work; Melakon is right.

Favorite Character: Data - I can't say I always loved his development, but when done right, it was some of the best they ever did. He's why I got invested in the show, & very little over 7 years changed that, with the exception of the awesomeness of Patrick Stewart. Troi, Wesley, Worf. They were ALL gimmicks

Once you get past the rather absurd notion that there's only one guy in all Starfleet who can head this covert mission, tagging along a Klingon & a doctor, it really is an episode with so much to sink your teeth into, & with screen crushing performances everywhere you turn, even including Frakes, who's character I come down hard on, but whose performance was pitch perfect. It may be one of the most perfectly executed episodes they ever did. Everything you see there they did for a reason, & there's not a bad performance in the bunch. It's had people debating it ever since

The most annoying thing regarding Lwaxana (and I like her, too) is, that she had different actresses who did the dubbing voice for her in the German episodes. She had several voices, both TNG and DS9. Some of the voices didn´t match to neither Majel Barrett nor to Lwaxana. Some of them did, but having different dubbing is annoying. I should watch it in English.

I actually quite disliked "Chain of Command" and I definitely disliked Jellico. He was too much a contemporary military man for me. I agree Picard had made the Enterprise a bit very comfortable but I don't think it was necessary to swing back into this other extreme.
The only parts of the episode(s) I liked was the stuff with the little Cardassian girl and when Jellico and Troi talked about Jellico's son (Jellicos family should have been seen on-screen imho)
And what I really hated was that it was Jellico telling her off that caused Troi to switch into the standard uniform. I mean it was pretty much the 24th century equivalent of bitch-slapping her and telling her to get back into the kitchen.
I'm not saying Troi should have stayed in the cleavage jumpsuits, I'm just saying she should have switched into the standard uniform on her own account and not because somebody told her to.

I didn´t like Jellico either. As to Trois uniform. Jellico interpreted the regulations strictly. Doesn´t mean that I liked it. Luckily he didn´t force her to wear her hair as bun again. I´m not familiar with military customs. But German military regulations say, that female officers have to wear long hair that touches the shoulder as bun or pony tail. You can see female Starfleet officers with either pinned-up or open hair, no matter their rank. Despite the fact that there must be regulations as to the hairstyle, too, I think females are more attractive with open hair.
I'm not seeing it. How is Jellico insisting that the bridge crew all wear their standard duty uniforms the equivalent of telling a woman to go to the kitchen?
I might have overstated it a little bit. Sometimes I do that. I would have swallowed it better if Deanna had went back to her usual attire after Jellico left and then, a few episodes later had adopted the standard uniform as a personal, independent decision.
That a permanent change to her character was done because someone told her off...that just reinforces the idea of Troi as this passive, reactionary being rather than someone who is competent and makes their own decision.
I'm not against Jellico telling her that or for Troi to permanently change to the standard uniform. I'm just having problems with the latter resulting from the former, especially without any explanation as to why she'd decide so. Was she just waiting all those years for someone to tell her to switch? Did she go "MIEP!" and always wore the uniform after that out of fear of being told off again?
I think while the switch ultimately benefited the Troi character in Season 7 it was an incredibly poor way to go about it.
Having regulations on women's hair in the Military is partly to do with keeping it looking neat and right, but mostly to do with the fact that long hair is easy for an enemy to grab onto. The vanity of long hair in the military becomes a life-threatening liability, if it's loose and flowing. The Military loves regulations and Men's hair is similarly regulated. Even mustaches have strict requirements. I know STARFLEET's not supposed to be Militaristic, but it made sense having Yar with short hair for that very reason.I´m not familiar with military customs.
