I know there are the big boys like SUPER MARIO, Metroid, Sonic, etc, But what are your favorite games in 2-D? mine would be the SUPER STAR WARS series for the SNES back in the day. And of course Super Metroid & recently most of the CASTLEVANIA series. And my guilty pleasure 2-D games would be robocop 2 (nes) and Judge dredd (snes) What can I say?I'm a fan of both & these were there best games.

Ah, a fellow RoboCop 2 lover! I thought I was the only one who owned that game (and enjoyed it). I replay it pretty often and have only just now discovered where the Murphy flashback is located in the Civic Centrum Level 2.

Some of my favorite 2-D games are:

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest - The first game was a classic, but this one just kicks ass. The bonus levels are challenging to find, and I love the pirate theme throughout.

Super Metroid - Play it about twice a year, have yet to all 100% of items. Still much, much more fun that Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Although I suck at the game and have never finished it because I get annoyed in the oil levels, this game is still fun and the speed of the game is still pretty impressive.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse - Although I love Simon's Quest, this game is just much more fun.

Galaga, Scorched Earth, and Star Control 2. I never got into the consoles. ;)

Some of my favorites are Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, and 3. There's also Shinobi for the NES, Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Bubsy: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind, and Jazz Jackrabbit.

I love 2D platformers. Super Metroid is definitely one of the best and I too tend to play it annually.

I also love pretty much any Castlevania game. Actually, I think the original is still probably my favorite. It has such a nice balance of difficulty and simplicity.

It's interesting though that, aside from Symphony of the Night, the so-called "Metro-Vania" games really don't do much for me.

Love the original Contra. Never found it as hard as some people claim it to be.

But, I'd have to say the winner goes to the Mega Man X series. to me they are the epitome of what a 2D action platformer should be. I also like how they got progressively harder. Though one might argue MMX6 is just too fucking hard. I know I've lost a few controllers to the Smashing Olympics on the account of that game.

Most of my favourite games are 2D, so you're not making this easy on me.

I suppose I'll have to go with the Mega Man series and Mega Man X (the early ones, anyway) for my favourite series. I must have completed each game half a dozen times and I've lost count on Mega Man 2. Those games were brilliant.

Sonic 2 - in my opinion, the best Sonic game. I have it on my phone :D
Comix Zone - really cool game . . . cross between comic book and fighting game, you're stuck in a comic book and you have to fight your way out with the help of a rat little rat . . . you can even rip part of the page you're on and make a deadly paper airplane :D
Riven - my favorite adventure game . . . the visuals are still excellent

Dig Dug!

Wizard of Wor

Spy Hunter

Gorf

Time Pilot

Zaxxon

Space Harrier

AfterBurner

Stun Runner

Hrmmm...I know there are more, but I cannot think of 'em right now...

One day in college I was bored, so I played my way through the first 6 Mega Man games consecutively. Took me about 8-10 hours if I recall correctly.

D'OH!:scream: how could I forget MEGAMAN!?!? to this day I still love playing those games(except for that battle network trash these young'ns play today)

I actually the first Battle Network game was actually pretty fun once you got into it.

It was the ten bazillion sequels each with ten bazillion versions that sucked the life out of it.

I could never get into the Battle Network games. I love the idea of them, but the execution was completely off. The dungeons were tedious and the battles took forever. Killing Mets used to be fun.

Several of the Citadel clones of multi-screen platform action adventure games for the BBC Micro were my favourite.

And of course, my beloved Repton... :D

sonic 1, GLOC, Lightning Fighters (vertical scrolling arcade game i played incessantly whilst on lunch breaks doing work experience at Tesco. by the end of the week, i'd completed it), Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Street Fighter II
