Eddie Egan, former Paramount Publicist of several Trek movies, confirmed for us from his contacts that it will be a DCP (Digital Cinema Package) of the theatrical version, not a satellite/dish broadcast.

Really? Compare the "super deluxe" DVD that TMP got vs. all the other TOS films.

I haven't watched any of the TOS movie DVDs in at least 10 years (probably more like 15), but as I recall all of the films got pretty spiffy 2-disc special editions. They may not have received new cuts like TMP, but they all got some quality VAM (even if there wasn't as much vintage content as I would have liked -- period featurettes, BTS footage, publicity material, etc.). Of course back then (early 2000s), a lot of far less deserving films regularly got the 2-disc SE treatment -- mainly new theatrical releases and including some major bombs. This was back when the studios thought VAM (often produced concurrently with the film) drove DVD sales; obviously no longer since quality VAM on a new release Blu-ray is quite rare these days.

Of course since the blu-ray era the only Trek film that has gotten a serious release was TWOK.

Illustrates my point; Paramount loves TWOK (and "the one with the whales"). It's been well established that practically every Trek movie since TWOK has had a Khan-like (sometimes too Khan-like) heavy.

I'm being hyperbolic of course when I say Paramount hates TMP, but they seemingly hold it in no particular esteem. They're certainly aware that even in fan circles TMP is widely derided ("The Motionless Picture", the uniforms suck, derp, etc.), so its mainstream appeal (and therefore it's viability as a money-maker) is highly doubtful. Everyone knows "KHAAAAAN!!!" though, hence the TWOK 4K remaster. Personally I'd expect (but not prefer, of course) a 4K remaster of TVH before TMP, but TVH has simply not aged well despite its crossover appeal in 1986.

Speaking of Paramount's Trek movie home video releases (including VHS and Laserdisc but especially DVD), back in the day it was always fun spotting errors on the cover art -- for example a ship or uniform that didn't actually appear in that particular film. I don't have any examples handy (my DVDs are long gone), but my friends and I would often wonder if anyone at Paramount Home Video had actually seen the movies or knew anything about Trek.

Obviously, I'm just a fan who loves it, but you know, it doesn't matter how much some of the films are or aren't well regarded...it's Goddamn Star Trek! One of the most popular and lucrative TV concepts in US history and they still just piss it away. They never look at the films with any coherently planned fashion and allow the movies to just lose steam and die.

Imagine if CBS decided to restore only the episodes most popular with fans and present the rest as 16mm film prints. "Restore City on the Edge of Forever to HD, but Spock's Brain is fine in 45 minute cut syndicated films. They won't care, it's a bad one."

Jeez, Paramount, do right by these films already. And CBS, while we're at it, actually treat the series like the damned Twilight Zone and restore it properly... Sigh...

Finally got it! They listed it as showing at the Seaport Cinema in Boston on the 15th, but it took 2 weeks before you could actually buy a ticket to that location. Looking forward to this, even if it's not the DE.

I would suspect very strongly that it will be the theatrical version.

Per the first sentence of the event description: "Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Trek: The Motion Picture on the big screen with the original 1979 theatrical cut, featuring Jerry Goldsmith’s rousing overture."

Anyone else notice the runtime of the movie is listed as 2 hours and 25 minutes? Either they're showing the SLV, or they're showing some sort of 14-15 minute special feature as part of the package.

not surprising if there's an added feature, the Fathom screening of TWOK started with a marginally interesting interview with Shatner.

They are showing the documentary from the DVD- "Writing TMP The Longest Trek". It has interviews with Jon Povill, Walter Koenig, and the writer couple who wrote the Phase II book.

Yeah, I usd to frequent that particular facebook group, but did some spring cleaning of all my excess stuff, such as groups, on facebook which led me to leave the group (my logic was that if I wanted to discuss Star Trek, I could always come here to do so ).
