Father's Day

For those who don't regularly go to startrek.com, I wanted to share my article for Father's Day. It was a real honor and great opportunity to tell my story.

Hey what a beautiful article!! And such an inspiration for me, as a father of a soon-to-be five year old!!

What better values and concepts to instill into our children, than those presented in Star Trek??!? Science, peace, progressive sensibilities (as a goal), the spirit of adventure and discovery along with the betterment of self and society? You're totally doing him, and those he will touch throughout his life a great service!!!

When my boy was just three, he apparently went back to mum's house one day (we're separated) and schooled her on the concept of heliocentrism - until that point she actually didn't even know the sun was at the center and planets revolved around it! I felt really proud that day!

I think he's liking the fact dad enjoys toys too. Here he is with my die-cast tricorder and communicator badge. One morning I awoke to find him scanning the inside of the toilet with it, and I was a little concerned for its safety

Let me tell you, awakening to the unique sound of a Mark-IX Tricorder tightly reverberating in a toilet-bowl is quite an experience.

He got the calm talk about putting such an expensive (not a toy) piece of hardware near water.

And to you!...my "Little Trekkies" are 26 and 24, so my advice to you is, Don't Blink! What a little star you have! I am sure you are very proud, and from one Dad to another, HappyFather's Day

Thanks very much HIjol! I know what you mean about blinking. My little boy gets bigger and bolder each week.

I get inspired as a father from the optimism about the future I get in large part from Star Trek, and it helps to see other like minded people like yourself and the gentleman who started this thread!!

Don't be. I honestly don't think she'd ever given it a thought. Might be all the 'keeping up with the kardashians' et al she does. (that's a statement about the prevalence of non-important things in popular culture, and applicable to lots of today's population - in case she ever reads this)

I think lack of celestial awareness is more common than we realize, regardless of it being touched on briefly in some high school class while 'more important' issues of teenage years are on the mind

Indeed, and I feel the same about optimism for the future coming, in part, from Star Trek. I think Roddenberry's greatest gift was that very feeling, no matter his faults and foibles.

Like you cannot imagine. I had one of my teachers of many years look up and notice the Sun, when the dust and angle were making it appear more whitish, as it really is, and remark, "...oh, is that the moon?"

Less people than we would like to think actually look up and pay attention to the sky.
