FX announced on Friday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that Season 4 of Fargo is super-officially a go, with Chris Rock set to lead the anthology series’ latest ensemble.
Season 4 synopsis

In 1950, at the end of two great American migrations — that of Southern Europeans from countries like Italy, who came to the U.S. at the turn of the last century and settled in northern cities like New York, Chicago, and African Americans who left the South in great numbers to escape Jim Crow and moved to those same cities — you saw a collision of outsiders, all fighting for a piece of the American dream.

In Kansas City, Missouri, two criminal syndicates have struck an uneasy peace. One Italian, one African American. Together they control an alternate economy — that of exploitation, graft and drugs. This too is the history of America. To cement their peace, the heads of both families have traded their eldest sons.

Chris Rock plays the head of one family, a man who — in order to prosper — has surrendered his oldest boy to his enemy, and who must in turn raise his son’s enemy as his own. It’s an uneasy peace, but profitable. And then the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into the hospital for routine surgery and dies. And everything changes.

It’s a story of immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money. And as always, a story of basically decent people who are probably in over their heads. You know, Fargo.

I don't know how I feel about Chris Rock starring. I've only seen him act in Lethal Weapon 4 which was 20 years ago.

 While I enjoy him as a standup comedian, as an actor that dude has played the same annoying guy in everything he's ever appeared in. He has all the artistic range of a referee whistle. I'm not sure how I could invest in a dramatic narrative that expected me to consider him relatable

If Bill Murray can do it, why not Chris Rock?

I'm optimistic, I think Chris Rock may be good at getting spun up in a criminal conspiracy out of his control.

I'm more troubled by this being set in Missouri instead of the snowy north.

Interesting casting. Often times, comedic actors in dramatic roles, especially those with good scripts and directors, perform quite well. Robin Williams, Bill Murray, even Jim Carrey (at least The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) have all proven this. With that in mind, I'm willing to give Chris Rock the benefit of the doubt even if I don't normally like his style of comedy. Plus, I trust Noah Hawley.

A surprising choice and it’s gonna be weird watching a Fargo where the lead character doesn’t have THAT accent. However, given how good the 3 previous seasons have been, I’m more than happy to see how Rock performs. The set-up sounds good too. I wonder who will be the equivalent of Billy Bob Thornton or David Thewlis this time.

quite well. Robin Williams, Bill Murray, even Jim Carrey (at least The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) have all proven this.

Agreed. Even Will Farrell in Stranger Than Fiction. Not a big fan of Will Farrell, but I loved him in that. I think it's all about putting them in a different acting mode that yield some different and unexpected results. Those are some of my favourite roles. I frankly feel like it's important for actors to step out of their comfort zones lest they be stuck in a rut constantly doing the same thing.

Not a fan of Chris Rock, but I'll give him the benefit of doubt here. Still haven't seen season 3, but the first two were pretty good and I loved how they ended up being connected.

Ah, yeah, Will Farrell in Stranger Than Fiction is another great example. The fact that I'm not a fan of Farrell's or Carrey's comedy style but loved the dramatic roles they performed are further reason why I'm willing to give Rock a chance here despite not liking his comedy either.

Yeah, exactly. And another thing: I think an actor who allows himself to take chances on different genres will often show greater range. Perfect example for me would be Robin Williams who became well known just as much for his dramatic roles as to his comedic roles. I also think that as an actor ages, the original genres they originally chose might have less roles for them coming their way, making branching out a good tactic to try to stay legitimate.

Martin Short did a season of Damages and was amazing. All I ever think of him in are comedies and stupid movies until then. So let's see how Chris Rock does.

Jack Huston, Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw Among 12 Cast

FX has revealed the Season 4 cast for Emmy-winning limited series Fargo, toplined by Chris Rock. Production begins this fall in Chicago for premiere on FX in 2020.

Joining Rock in the next installment are Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Jason Schwartzman (Funny People), Ben Whishaw (Paddington 1 & 2), Jessie Buckley (Beast), Salvatore Esposito (Gomorrah), Andrew Bird (Baskets), Jeremie Harris (Legion), Gaetano Bruno (La porta rossa), Anji White (The Chi), Francesco Acquaroli (Dogman, Diaz – Don’t Clean Up This Blood), E’myri Crutchfield (Roots) and Amber Midthunder (Hell or High Water).

Hot damn, that's an awesome set of actors for the new season. I'm seriously excited about this season now.
