Far Beyond the Stars

Son of Quark

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Anyone like Far Beyond the Stars from Season 6? What a clever episode, in my opinion. When I first saw it, it was like whoa, that is a trip. Twilight Zone "ish" in a way. Kinda made you think, which one was the REAL one. Was Deep Space Nine a dream that Benny/Sisko was writing for a science fiction magazine in the early 1950's? Or was Deep Space Nine real and Sisko imagining this? Very clever episode in my opinion.

Son of Quark, you might be interested to know one the endings the writers originally considered for DS9 was to have it finish with a shot of Benny Russell at his typewriter - at least, that's what I heard/read somewhere.

Yes a brilliant episode although I always take it on its face value. I watched it just a few days ago as I am drawing to the close of DS9 yet again. Just one more disc to go.

Now, that would have been an awesome ending! If they did that, that would have been one of those endings nobody saw coming.

This is one of my favorite episodes! I love the music, the setting, pretty much everything about it. Avery Brooks gives his best acting performance of the series in this one, IMO.

A unique episode and I rather love it. Having said that, it's hard to watch Benny's breakdown near the end of the episode. Not so much because it's an emotional scene, but mostly because Avery Brooks comes dangerously close to overacting.

BTW, ending the series with a shot of Benny at a typewriter would've seriously pissed me off.

I like it for being off the wall and doing something completely different.

The only complaint I have was that it needed to go back to pre-Civil rights America to make it's point. If it wanted to be socially relevant, could we not do a show in the present day with current discrimination?

Well, they already sort of did a 'contemporary' version of that in Past Tense.

Me too.

I know Star Trek is fiction and all that, but at least we can sort of pretend that what we're watching is 'real', at least within the context of its own universe. If that alternate ending had occurred, then none of it ever happened - none of it would mean anything. All of Trek would, in effect, never have existed.

While that ending might have pissed some off, I still think it would have been a cool ending. It would have been like, whoa.....Me, I think it would have been brilliant, but I can understand why some of y'all wouldn't have liked it because that would mena that Deep Space Nine never happened/existed.

The ending would've been crap because Deep Space Nine is not the only Trek series. And also this "is it real or not?" thing is quite lame in most cases, especially in this one, because it has NO impact on the story at all, I mean, a TV series is already just a dream, so it's a dream of a dream and it doesn't make any difference at all.

The scenario only works if it actually interacts with the story, like in "Total Recall".

The camera should have pulled back, showing it was all on a set with the futuristic sets in the background.

Ha! They should have pulled a Cosby Show and had Sisko/Kasidy dance off of the set.

But, yeah, FBTS is one of the best episodes.

The problem with doing the Benny writing Sisko ending is that it had already been done on the last episode of St. Elsewhere.

I loved the episode, but ending it like that would've been bad. It'd have been like ending Buffy with Buffy gettign released from that mental hospital, or being lobotimised or some shit.

Yes, it would have been great, though the point was already made in FBtS and at the beginning of season 7, so I don't think it was absolutely necessary. Also, the closing shot of DS9 fading into the distance is quite beautiful and appropriate in itself.

Of course, if it had ended like that, the question would be "did Benny Russell create TNG and Voyager as well?"
