Is this a good place to post stories at? Any loopholes or downsides to posting stuff here?

Or just stick with the TrekBBS? :)

I have all of my stuff posted there. There are some guidelines though.

(Copied from FF.net guidelines)

Entries not allowed:
  1. Non-stories: lists, bloopers, polls, previews, challenges, author notes, and etc.
  2. One or two liners.
  3. MST: comments inserted in between the flow of a copied story.
  4. Stories with non-historical and non-fictional characters: actors, musicians, and etc.
  5. Any form of interactive entry: choose your adventure, second person/you based, Q&As, and etc.
  6. Chat/script format and keyboard dialogue based entries.

Actions not allowed:
  1. Multiple entries of the same material. There can only be one copy of any unique story on the entire site. No exceptions.

  2. Entry must be given the proper rating. No exceptions.

FFN gets a lot of slack because there's no real quality control, but I would still say it's far and away one of the best places for posting fic. It gets a massive amount of traffic, and the user interface makes it easy for people looking for particular kinds of fic to find your stuff.

Two other places you might consider:

AO3 (a shiny, new, fan-owned, multi-fandom archive).

Livejournal. Livejournal fandom is huge. If you have a bit of a search around for Trek comms (or any other fandoms you write for), you should be able to find communities of other readers and writers quickly enough.

What SiorX said. I have almost all my stuff there, and i've never understood the bitching I've seen concerning the site. It's user-friendly to the hilt and it's not that hard to find good stories there if you're willing to look for them.

Have there ever been any cases of users submissions going missing, or conflict from posting fanfic on other sites as well as that one?

Thanks for the tips, Graywand2. I have a rather large BSG fanfic which I'm near to finishing and I'm thinking of putting it up there.

And here, naturally. :)

Nope, none at all. Well, user submissions have been deleted for violating the guidelines I copied from their TOS, but I don't think there's been a case of that happening by accident the entire time I've been there.

Cheers for that. I'll post it as soon as I've finished all six episodes.

Real life getting in the way.

Stupid real life.

:)

I'm not sure if its good or not, as I've never posted there. But if its TREK stories you want to post here is a good place. :)

I second this recommendation wholeheartedly.

Be aware there is a quality cut--you'll be screened by the mods, but even if you don't make the cut, there are people willing to help you as beta readers.

Candlelight, if you need any help getting yourself situated on FF.net, just PM me here and I'll help you.

It's exactly these kinds of overbearing guidelines that not only make me never want to post there, but only encourage me to write stories that will be sure to go against every rule, just because.

I can rec both, since I post to both. One thing in posting an ST series that Ad Astra has over FF. When you have a series of stories, it is a lot easier to establish which one comes first in your chronology, and to separate out what happens in each chapter. One MASH series I write I can go Book One, etc.. But an ST AU of mine lends itself better to having series within the larger cycle separated by timeframe. For the most part, my ST stuff goes on AA, while my non-ST ends up on FF.

I'm with you BolianAdmiral. And it isn't a slight on those who post on that site, but those rules do seem a bit over bearing. I think BBS/AD ASTRA are good because, for the most part, they let you write anything, with-in reason. Star Trek fan fiction should above all things support the concept of IDIC...IMO..

To be fair many of those rules are violated at will. I frequently quote non-public domain persons and stories in my epigraphs and I haven't been banned or deleted yet.

Also, despite the Archie restriction, there is a whole Josie & The Pussycats section-based on the HB cartoons and movie, but Josie is still an Archie character originally.

And anyway, even with all restrictions the admins in ff.net don't gatekeep you with them before you've posted a single story, unlike that trek fic site everybody seems to love.

^ All they do on AA is check grammar/spelling and format. we admins do some cleaning-up for them, and if its too bad, its sent off, but thats just to make sure all the stories are reader friendly and not a headache to read.

Exactly. That's all it is. But if you have a problem with it, there's an easy solution: don't post!!! :klingon:

It's just like that old rule--if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.
