"Fanboys" - a lot of fun!

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
This movie got such a bad rap when it came out and me and my SW buddy couldn't find it playing anywhere. I got it the other day and she came over and we had the best time. I loved it! Sure people say it was funny but not great I laughed a lot. Better than otehr comedies out there (like the overrated boring as all hell doesn't know when to end "Superbad").

Some things I noticed...

Look at the, uh, manly features of Kirk and Khan's statues (especially Khan's). LOL

"Rush is variety!" .. truer words have never been spoken!

Liked Ray Park's cameo. His outfit is right out of THX 1138!

Kristin Bell was irresistable in this movie!

"Go ahead burn the ewok!"

-- you are very, very high ...

Well this movie was funny as shit!

I saw it this summer. It was okay, largely forgettable. Rogen playing multiple roles was a hoot, Kevin Smith and Jay Mewes cameo was chucklesome, Shatner cameo was pretty epic, and Kristen Bell was quite attractive...

But, it got a resounding "Meh!" from me. I don't like Star Wars though, so that may have made things less funny even though I knew nearly everything referenced that was specifically Star Wars. The Skywalker Ranch was drawn out a bit too much for me, IIRC. Ultimately, the whole film just wasn't that funny, sure it was zany and had a lot of energy at times... But, it just didn't click.

Superbad, on the other hand, was great. I should watch that one again. :p

I was thinking about seeing it, but it was just too hard to find, and plus it was critically panned (unlike Superbad, which was hilarious).

When I *heard* about this movie, it sounded funny - and a geek *must-see*...

But when I saw the preview...it just looked...*meh*...

And I don't care at all that they mock (us) Star Trek fans (I might even find it funny - I like to laugh at myself)...it's just that they got all the Star Wars costumes and references pat on...and in the preview I saw...all the Trek costumes were...well...*weren't*...

...and I saw some "Trekkie" in a not-uniform, commenting this was the "birthplace of Picard" (in the USA!?)...and standing in front of a statue that looked to me like *Kirk* (in a TOS uniform & acting outr a scene from "Amok Time"...)

It's just that...*real* Trekkies wouldn't be so careless - this was more like the mainstream perception of Trekkies - and that not only killed the...believability and realism for me (and was distracting)...but it seemed *lazy*...

If you are gonna mock/parody something...at least do the *research* (on your subject/targets) and get the details right!!!

So anyway...I've not yet been bored enough to check it out yet.

The uniforms were a copyright thing, where as Lucas endorsed the movie, and let them use sound effects from the films.

To me it wasn't very good. The characters were all to 'zany' and it just didn't ring true.

This is a fun movie with a good heart.

If you're a sci-fi fan, it's worth a viewing.

If you're a Rush fan, it's also worth a look.

:techman:

It was okay (not great but a few moments), but I think it would have had a lot more resonance had it been released a year or two after The Phantom Menace, not a decade after.

I enjoyed it parts of it but overall I felt like it could have been a lot better. Sort of like Free Enterprise, I really want a super nerdy comedy and it has some good jokes but overall the movie was fairly weak. Although, the last line and Kristen Bell in a gold bikini were certainly worth the price of admission.

I reeally enjoyed this movie a lot. i like SW and Trek so from either perspective it was very funny.

I found the Trek stuff a bit clumsy but the movie was OK though I think they could have done a stronger movie out of the material.

I think my favorite part was Ethan Suplee as Harry Knowles.

Didn't find it funny...I had high expectations after looking forward to it for years after delay after delay -- and was hoping it would be as good as the similar Free Enterprise...but it wasn't. Not even close.

Free Enterprise is MUCH much funnier.

my problem with FE is that writers (who I also believe were the actors) were kind of snotty, like they were thinking "this is good, witty writing. And a lot of stuff that seemed "written" just wasn't funny, like the whole Bradykiller bit.

Fanboys wasn't as funny as it maybe could have been, but it was written with affection and was not condescending

Free Enterprise is a better film, but I showed Fanboys to my SF-meh girlfriend, and we both enjoyed. After the credits rolls, she tells me she's never seen Star Wars - anything, and asked me if there was really "geek gang rivalry" between Trek/Wars.

I started with... "you know the whole Biggie/Tupak thing. It's like that with more slap fighting, harsh words, and less bullets..." :)
