Fan Film Shut Down by Copyright Law

That is where the notice is posted as one of three of the main NV mirrors.

The site is back up, it was down as there was a copyright complaint made against the site, which in fact this notice got back on line almost immmediately.

Hmm. I wonder if the complaint was made by anyone we know?

Remember when World Enough and Time was released, and there were folks over at NV going ballistic because of "unauthorised" BitTorrents? That creative commons license allows that - as long as a copy of the license is included. The CC license also allows the creation of derivative works - which is in direct contradiction of the disclaimer psted above.

I think those NV chaps need to have a lawyer look at their licensing - as there are versions of the creative commons license that would better serve their needs.

I also wondered, unfortunately the hosts are staying tight lipped.

GW ain't the only one. Universal still has a gag-order on Richard Hatch's "Second Coming" Battlestar Galactica trailer - only to be used at conventions and never distributed.

Some lowlifes always try to make a quick buck on free-of-charge material. If CBS gets wind of enough of those bootlegs, they will start to come down on the crators of that stuff. So buy buying bootlegs you prove to those, that sell those, that they can get money this way and hurt the creators, because they get into difficulties and in the end the fans!

Can't charge for it, huh? Then how come I've seen an add for WEAT pre-burned on DVD for 7 bucks?

Looks to me like they're saying the $7 is all for shipping. That seems a bit unlikely, though.

And I don't believe it's official.

So, should I report this to someone? I didn't say anything to anyone official because the email I got (wish I'd kept it now) said it was authorized by New Voyages...

I did use their "email this to a friend" option to notify James Cawley about this, couldn't harm, if you send a mail to someone at New Voyages, too, as you should, when you stumble about NV-DVDs.

New Voyages are aware of it as it was mentioned on their forum. They are tight lipped though and made no announcements about it which I presume means it's not authorised and they are looking into it.
