Famous person you have seen, met, or know personally

I was reading and saw where someone saw President Reagan and his wife drive by and the Prez and Nancy waved to them.

So I wondered if anyone else had seen, met or knew any famous person. Extra credit if said person is connected to Star Trek.

As for me, I knew Dave Winfield (baseball player) in college and grew up with Jon Vezner (country song writer and married to Kathy Mattea, though I have never met her or seen Jon in years). I once met Charles Colson and spent a day with 1997 Miss America Tara Holland (Christensen) and her husband Jon.

And I don't know how famous he is, but I am friends with the founder of Merry Maids, Dallen Peterson.

Oh, two more sightings. Had a bunch of kids on a field trip in Minneapolis and saw the governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, drive by in his Hummer. And might have seen Michael Nesmith of Monkeys fame riding a chopper near Yosemite Park in California. Looked like him and had the toque.

That was me who President Reagan and Nancy waved too! It was so cool because there were only five of us standing on the street corner near the White House and didn't expect to see him. We just happened to turn and see his motorcade approaching and it slowed down to turn the corner where we were. We could have easily touched his car if we wanted as there was nobody there to stop us and it was going slow as it turned the corner. We all started waving like crazy and the headlights from the car in back was shining into Reagan's back window and he and Nancy leaned forward and smiled and waved back to us and we started cheering like crazy. He was driving to the Capital to make his State of the Union speech that night.

I also met Mr. Sulu and he was real cool.

The list of Trek actors would go on and on since, well, let's face it, lot of us have been to cons, so here's a few that are a little outside that realm.

I met George Takei - now it was BECAUSE of a con but it wasn't AT a con. I was at the con in Cherry Hill, NJ and we actually went a little otu of town to go eat, and he and his partner just so happened to choose the same place so I -literally- ran into him in the buffet line! Nice guy though, I think my deer-in-headlights look gave me away as a trekkie.

And I went to elementary school through highschool with the White Rabbits' music video director (they had a hit a few years ago called Percussion Gun), and also 2 of the band members; were all from my home town of Jefferson City, MO. Actually in their bio information stuff they always claim to be from Columbia, MO because it's a much hipper, liberal, trendy town about half an hour north where the Mizzou campus is, n where they all went to college after HS, and Jeff City's pretty conservative traditional middle america and they don't like being associated with it but the truth is that's where half the band's from. Although I think the bassist left, Adam Russel.

Oh and my ex-gf Darla was on 2 episodes of MTV's dating TV show "Next" and 1 episode of "Exposed" (similar). Both pretty retarded, and it doesn't exactly make her "famous", but it was amusing.

There was also the (in)famous Dallas "Non-Con 08" originally setup by Fed-Con but then run (into the ground) by TrekUnited, and that was pretty cool because, anyone who's been to those like $100 breakfast/lunches at Creation cons knows it's a little... like 8 guests all trying to talk to one celebrity and it's a little ridiculous, it's not like a chill hanging out environment... unless it's Jeffrey Combs bc it's usually drunk so

no but after they cancelled the con, lot of the celebrity guests gathered in the hotel bar that night and me and some friends were around and there was some pretty cool casual conversations with like Garrett Wang, John Billingsley and his wife were there, Connor Trinneer. I've talked to Connor Trinneer 2 or 3 times, I wouldn't claim to like 'know' him, but through coincidence he's been at every con I've been to so he's started to remember me bc I'm always with a horde of "Not.Dead" women from HoT and TriS , he's very cool.

I've met former Attorney General Ashcroft twice and my grandfather knew his father and him since he was a boy. My mom dated the former AG's brother.

My list of celebrity encounters would be waaaaay too long to list, as I've been working on conventions on-and-off for about 25 years. Some of the more interesting ones, however:

- on the Monday morning after Toronto Trek 20, which I'd co-chaired, I was in an elevator with Garrett Wang. Garrett felt the need to introduce himself. (That was the same day when David Gerrold kissed me goodbye after I helped him load up his car.)

- at Dragon*Con in 2008, I was helping to set up for the Rainbow Party and George Takei and Brad Altman came in. They were to be the Guests of Honour but were begging off due to fatigue. For some reason I was pushed into the photo, even though my contribution to the party was minimal.

- Ellen Muth: I chaired her first-ever convention, so a year or so later when I saw her at Dragon*Con, she addressed me by name. The following year we had her as a guest at Polaris, and since one of my jobs is to liaise with the author guests, I went to the airport with a few other people to pick up Jim Butcher (author of the "Dresden Files" series of books). Ellen was coming in around the same time, so we were bringing them back to the hotel together. When Ellen came out of the passenger area, she saw me standing there, walked up to me, and said, "Hi, remember me?"

- I've been friends with author Robert J. Sawyer (whose book "FlashForward" was the basis for the recent TV show) for about 20 years.

- I've been called a dwarf by Harlan Ellison. (I was on my knees putting the books he'd just signed into my backpack, and he came up behind me and loomed over me with all 5'5" of his being.) Harlan also once attempted to sell me a combination storm window/bidet on the phone.

- I spent about three hours chatting with author Charles Stross at the 2008 Worldcon, as we were staffing adjacent tables in the exhibit area.

- one Sunday morning, I was on the subway on my way to a Polaris meeting, when Olympic medalist (for swimming) Mark Tewksbury sat down next to me and started a conversation.

- this will only likely mean anything to my fellow Canadians, but I'm friends with the guy who performs Ed the Sock, and Liana K (his real-life wife). Liana worked for me on the 2009 Worldcon, running the Aurora Award ceremony.

- one of my other responsibilities at that same Worldcon was Opening Ceremonies, and I arranged for Marc Garneau, the first Canadian in space, to give the opening keynote address. I didn't have much face time with him, but I did meet him and got to have a picture taken.

- at that same Worldcon, I got to chat briefly with Nobel laureate Paul Krugman, after I'd manned the mike stand at his talk, as well as author Neil Gaiman. And for some reason Cory Doctorow greeted me by name when we crossed paths. I don't recall ever having met him before that, so I have no idea how he knew who I was (when he called out, we were too far from each other for him to have been able to read my badge clearly, so it was obvious that he recognized me - we must have met when he lived in Toronto, but I honestly don't remember).

- apparently I was serving Sean Astin all evening when I was tending bar at a party during the 2002 Worldcon, but never knew it (I was more excited about meeting author Harry Turtledove at that same party).

- when my ex-husband and I were first dating, one of his roommates was Stacie Mistysyn, who played Caitlin Ryan on Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High. (I believe she's also played the character on Degrassi: The Next Generation.)

- I bumped into Robert Gant (who played Ben on the Canadian/American version of "Queer As Folk") as he was on his way into a condo building with an armful of groceries. I rather enjoyed teasing one particular friend of mine after that with the information that I knew where Mr. Gant - or perhaps I should say Mr. Gonzalez, as "Robert Gant" is a stage name - lived. (I also ran into Randy Harrison, who played Justin on the show, in the same neighbourhood at lunchtime one day.)

- I don't often go to bookstore signings, but I made a point of going when Douglas Adams ("The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") was in town and got the first two volumes in the series signed (he was only signing two books per person).

Now you see why I didn't list all of the famous people I've met - I'd probably be here for days, though I could probably just go through my autograph collection.

(Sorry to hear about your Grandfather.)

I don't think I've met anyone famous, and if I have, they're famous in their own fields and, are friends and colleagues, so I just consider them as that, friends/people/my life.

However, when I was in year 4 (the 4th Grade), my school went to London (with a bunch of other schools from all over the capital/country 'I guess') to see Nelson Mandela meet John Major (and others) in 1996. It was on the news, saw the back of my head.

I forgot to mention that I'm semi-friends, more of an acquaintance, with retired USMC President's Own conductor Colonel John Bourgeois. Really nice guy, willing to talk with people, and has loads of funny anecdotes from his time at the White House.

I also have a picture on my wall of me in my UW Band uniform shaking hands with former HHS Secretary and former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson. Since I'm a public school teacher, the union doesn't like me displaying it at work. ;)

My dad met JFK when he did a speech at Shasta Dam when it was opened.

And my mom's family was friends with the Judd's.

Mike Dirnt, bassist for Green Day, had a crush on my cousin when they were in high school and actually went to her wedding a few years later as did the whole band since they all went to high school together.

Jacoby Shaddix, lead singer of Papa Roach, is my cousin and I have spent some holidays with him in the past.

My sister got hit on by David Draiman at Oz Fest a few years ago.

I met Colbie Caillat a few months ago.

I met the former Senator Christopher Dodd from Connecticut 15 years ago when I was in high school. My Mother's family knew John Boehner, hailing from the same town. My uncle went to high school with him. My mom's older sister dated him. According to her, he didn't appear as if he would one day be a congressman.

I've had dinner several times with Mike Wolfe (of History Channel's American Pickers), in addition to working on his original pitch videos for the show. When I lived in eastern Iowa, we'd meet up every couple of months, though we see each other far less now that I live in Madison. Still try to hook up when we have a chance, though. Good man, good friend.

I have a signed ticket stub from a John Tesh concert.

Too many people know him only from TV, but he's been a musician for much longer than that. I love his music. This was one of my favorite concerts I've ever been to.

Rick Rossovich is a cousin..

Tim Rossovich is also a cousin

met and had Chuck Yeager speak at my sophmore English class (for a project)

As a child I met many of the astronauts involved with the Apollo project...

Saw Presidents Reagan, George HW Bush and Clinton at assorted rallys..

Shook hands with Prince Charles when he visited our base while I was stationed there...

My cousin was the secretary for the head of Jobete Music, Motown's publishing division Robert Gordy. So I met many working around Motown from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. The most famous today would be either Smokey Robinson or Lionel Ritchie. On my route I have had many industry folk probably the most famous was Lennie James while Jericho was still in production.

Is he the same as he appears on TV? I mean, he appears to be someone who is always pumped and ready for action.

My grandfather is second cousin's with comedian Christopher Titus' mother.

And I'm not sure if any of you follow the CHL, but my cousin is a goalie for the Louisiana Mud Bugs.

so does partying with Abbie Hoffmen count? ...or like I got Kurt Vonnegut's autograph and shook his hand//still have that autograph//.. or like the lead guitarist for big brother and the holding company I shook his hand.
