FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

Honestly, I would have cheated if I had the PC version.
I guess part of the reason that it didn't matter was because I went for the bobblehead achievement and that naturally gets you to level 20.

Personally, I'm more interested in the story when it comes to RPGs... and grinding is one of those outdated methods of designs from the bygone era of the 80s when games had to be hard to make up for the fact that they were so short.

Oh pish tosh.

Character stats and grinding are not the same thing and the former is not a harbinger of the latter. Hell, the very Bethesda games we're discussing are a testament to that.

I'm no fan of grinding myself (especially when the game design forces you into it), but levelling up naturally is cool and part of the fun of an RPG imho.

RPGs not really your thing then? :vulcan:
Quite the contrary. Most games I play these days are RPG's. It's just that I don't want to go through the process again and frankly Oblivion's leveling system is kind of lame. I just want to have every option available to me when I do quests. And I'm only casually playing Oblivion on the side. Lord of the Rings Online is still taking up the vast majority of my gaming time since I started playing a year ago.

Ah, there's me barking up the wrong tree then (my sarcasm detector obviously isn't working today).

Agreed. There really is only one character class, jack-of-all-trades. Plus the world-levelling is abysmal. You should not be able to complete the main quest at Level 1. And while we're at it, the ability to become *head of the mages guild* without casting *a single spell* is ludicrous. Having said that, I loved the game for its epic openy worldy-ness.

Thankfully they pulled their heads out of their arses for Fallout 3 though, I just hope some of that rubs off on TES V.

^Actually, you do have to cast at least four spells at the magic pillar in one of the quests. The thing that annoyed me the most is that as the archmage, I can still be kicked out for stealing a few coins from an apprentice, and the scholars still don't respect me.

Yes, but if you don't have a magic char with suitable spells, they are provided handily in scroll form right before you enter the chamber. Completely removing the need to be skilled in magic to advance the Mages questline, meaning that you can become Archmage without casting a single spell.

;)

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU AINT GOT THIS FREAKIN' GAME:

ARRGHH!! This game is so frustrating, but so fun! I found Vault 87. Met up with the Mutant Fawke and dumped some of my stuff on him to carry to free up my weight. He finds the freakin' Geck, but then I cant get my stuff back from him I gave him. I then attempt to escape and the freakin' Enclave Col dude catches me. Now I gotta carry some virus for the retard computer president so it can iradicate everybody with a mutation in the waste land, but first I gotta fight my way out of his freakin' headquarters with less guns and aid stuff because I gave it to freakin" mutant Fawke!

I should have kept my FAT MAN. I would have nuked President Computer.

Spoiler about the above spoiler....

You could also have talked the President into killing himself and destroying the Enclave Headquarters. That's what I did.

Spoiler:

Mallet, Really? I didn't know that. I must have overlooked that when I was talking to this moron. I'm hoping I can make it to the citadel and turn the virus over to one of those Elder dudes or Doctor Li.

I hope I meet up with Fawke again so I can get my stuff back.

I did have fun killing those slavers when rescuing the kids. The guy wanted 500 caps and I only had 77 so I figured I would lay waste to Paradise City and I did. Nobody was left alive except for the slaves in the cages.

^ I haven't read any of the spoilers post, so I don't know where you are in the main story, but "the end" is kind of subjective in Fallout 3. I'm at Level 11 and I'm only just now getting to Rivet City.

Also, am I getting near the end of this game?

Yah, you are and as a warning: Once you finish the main quest the game ends. No going back and exploring, etc... so you might want to hold off delivering the the vial of stuff. That's what I did. Now I'm exploring and doing all the other side quests and stuff. I'll go back and finish the main quest when I am ready to finish.

PS. In march an expansion is coming out that continues the game past the main quest so you will be able to keep leveling up (after level 20 which is the cap right now) and explore further, but until then if you finish the main quest it's over. No going back to do other stuff unless you reload from an earlier save.

I would recommend the same thing - stop the main quest, explore everything you can, find every kind of special weapon you can, do every quest you can do and only then finish the game. The game ends after the end of the main quest and the current ending is pretty much idiotic, to put it mildly.

About Fawkes - I've met him again when I escaped the Raven Rock, he was near the entrance killing enclave soldiers. He can join you only if you have positive karma.

About slavers - I visited this place earlier than I should have and killed everyone there with a headshot from .44 Magnum. Killing some of them gives you a positive karma, even if you just go in and start killing everyone without a provocation.

RE: Fawkes - I also had him/her carry a bunch of stuff in the Vault before I got ambushed and yes, while I did later meet up again, he/she didn't still have my stuff. So either kiss it goodbye or reload from before you entered that Vault.

SPOILER:

Well this sucks! I wish I had read all these posts before about not finishing the last mission. I ended up killing the colonel and I saved it at the point where me or that one chick has to go in and shut down the purifer before it explodes. Once I went in and typed in the code it ended, so I went back to my save and let her go in and type in the code and it still ended. What happens if I just leave and let the place blow up? Will I still be able to continue or will the game end? I'm like at level 9.

I think by that point you're locked in the room and can't get out. This is why I had about fifty million saves on the off chance I did something irreparably stupid like try to complete the main quest.

Yep, I was stuck in the room, but I forgot I saved the game before I went into the memorial so now me and Fawkes are running around all over the place killing stuff. I went to that town to kill the ants for the little boy and now I am in DC in the Valtech HQ running around. Next stop will be the Capital.

Now your life will be much easier - you'll do most of the side quests with Fawkes at your side :)

So true. Fawkes is a great help. He pretty much kills everything (even though he wasnt quick enough one time and a Deathclaw got me near Vault 92). I am getting tired of him killing everything because I want a chance to do it, but then I get lost in building and I can hear a growl or a mutant or scavenger coming for me and I am glad he has my back. Does he ever leave or will he stay with me forever?
