FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

So far I am just kicking around Megaton and trying to do a few of the quests in the area. I am dying a lot, I just suck with my weapons. I try and use VATS and zoom in for a nice head shot, BANG, ...and they lose a point or two of health. Suddenly my deadly head shot doesn't seem so badass.

I am enjoying the game, the wasteland looks gorgeous, exploring is a lot of fun... So far the characters and dialogue don't have that "Fallout" feel to me, more like an imitation of it. I guess that is good enough, but I hope as the game progresses it gets more of that old Fallout personality.

I realize how important luck actually is, since it guarantees crits.

God, I dunno, after the relative simplicity of Fable 2, SPECIAL is really kicking my ass. I hate min/maxing in RPGs. :(

I didn't get very far into game last night.
After watching the Dead Space movie then House I got a late start.

I got up to the part of actually leaving but I may re-play some of that.

The faces and the way conversations are presented are really starting to grate on me... Fable 2 did the same thing. I think I've been spoiled by Mass Effect. The hacking also really annoys me, it basically just a guessing game. At least the hacking in Bioshock felt like some skill was involved, even if it didn't really make sense.

I'm certainly enjoying it so far, but a lot of the niggles and issues I had from Oblivion have carried over and I look at them even less favorably for this repeat performance. But it has the same strength of Oblivion... exploration is fun. And I agree with The Evil Dead on the guns, a lot of them feel really weak. I guess if you put more points into them they get stronger... but that doesn't really make much sense. That said, I did a point blank shotgun kill with VATS and it was pretty hilarious to watch

I managed to get it working last night, but it took me 3-4 hours of screwing around. At least it was worth it, as the game is gorgeous. I like that pretty well known actors like Liam Neeson and Malcolm McDowell lend their voices to the game.

I picked this up for the 360 last night. I am liking it so far even if I am just barely outside of the vault.

I'm enjoying the game quite a bit, so far, even though my character sucks right now. I seem to be dying quite a bit. Even with the VAT system, I'm barely hurting some enemies after a headshot. The VAT system and action points were implemented fairly well, though. I find myself relying on it more, and watching a slo mo head explosion is pretty cool. My main nitpick so far is the hacking ability, which seems like it's mostly a guessing game. Something more interactive than picking words would have been nice.

The opening sequence was pretty interesting. It's a nice way to portray life in the vault, and mixing character creation in with childhood events was a nice touch. The gameplay does feel a bit like Oblivion, but captures the feel of Fallout more than I was expecting. The menu and leveling system help with that a lot.

The world is gorgeous, from what I've seen of it. It's very atmospheric, and exploration is fun.

Got home from work after a 16 hour day only to get a text message from the local game store informing me they had PS3 copies of Fallout 3. Sleep or trek to the game store?

Trek.

I just got out of the Vault, so far it's awesome. There are a lot of little improvements over Oblivion, especially with regards to ambient speech, which is great. I have to admit I sort of wanted to spend more time being a kid though!

If anyone's curious about PS3 performance, it's easily playable. From what I can tell it does indeed look jaggier than the 360 version, and the framerate isn't butter, but it's rarely distracting. It performs better and is cleaner than Oblivion if that tells you anything. Basically, if you can, get it for 360 or PC, but if you only have a PS3, don't let the horror stories you've heard deter you.

Thoughts:

- I'm gonna be holding on to that BB gun, won't sell it.

-
I was hurt when Amata wouldn't leave with me.

- I really want to redo my character, he's a young black man with white hair. It looks daft.

- Someone needs to beat the folks at Bethesda with a Naughty Dog polish stick. Animations matter!

- I will be lost in this for hours.

- :lol:Bethesda's improved 3rd person camera.

- Voice acting's great so far. It was a ton of fun making baby sounds.

- As seems to be the case with videogame lock picking, I have no damn clue how it works. Any tutorials?

- Folks, PLEASE TAG SPOILERS APPROPRIATELY!

Same here. It's been tempting to sell the BB gun, as it's one of the highest priced items in my inventory right now, but I'm going to hold onto it.

I'm usually all right at the lockpicking mini-games, but I'm breaking bobby pins left and right. Forcing it seems to be working out better for me. :p

I'd just like to say that I brought up the "Oblivion with guns" criticism several months ago. :p

Would you like a "stating the obvious" medal? :p

Oblivion was great fun, but it was also very flawed. And so far Fallout 3 has the same flaws. IMO, some of those things were acceptable a few years ago but are now less so.

Isn't SecuROM fucking ridiculous? It's DRM at the level of Sony rootkit quality.

All of their customers are automatically criminals, nobody can play the game that they paid for.

While I disagree with the use of SecuROM, comparing it to a rootkit is a bit disingenuous.

SecuROM is better than StarForce, which is actually what the Eastern Europe release of Fallout 3 uses.
Also, this doesn't have the dial home feature of EA SecuROM games... at least, I don't think it does.
