FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

I tried GameFly - I eventually gave it up. Not that it's bad, per say - it's far slower than netflix in terms of turnaround time and new popular games are almost impossible to get for rental right away (low availability) - but overall it works fine.

Yeah, I've done it before under a different account. I think that I will just hop on for a month to play Fallout 3 and then cancel. Hell, if I wanted to buy the game, the keep it now price is $50 so I would only lose about $5 on the deal.

My copy was delivered as I was walking out the door to work this morning. Tonight's raid night, too, so I'll have to wait until 9ish at least before I can play it. I'm impressed with Amazon's release day delivery. I'll probably be pre-ordering everything else through them from now on.

Amazon's release day delivery system is awesome. I've used it several times and it's never failed me (should've done it this time for Fallout, to save me a trip to the store).

I managed to get a copy of the Collector's Edition for the Xbox 360. I now have a Pip-Boy bobble head sitting on my desk at work. This is the first day of the rest of my life.

A bug/annoyance in the Fallout 3 save system that everybody should take note of:

http://www.gameplayer.com.au/gp_documents/Fallout3-Warning.aspx

Apparently there's a point near the end game that, once you pass it, you're in for the ride to the end of the game and it'll preclude you from exploring the world any more (like passing through the conduit in Mass Effect).

They recommend a series of 3 saves that you move over in sequence (read the article for details).

In case you missed the large warning in our Fallout 3 review, if you complete the main quest by walking into the final room of Fallout 3, the game will lock you in there until you do what needs to be done - then it'll boot you back to the title screen. This sucks because there is so much more to explore in the Washington wastes and, unless you've saved beforehand, you'll be forever denied access to the outside world. Unless you start again, but really, who wants to do that crap?

So take the tip, whenever playing Fallout 3 - or any game of epic size and scope for that matter - get in the habit of having three saves; the games Autosave which triggers when you enter a new environment, plus two more that you should save over in sequence.

I'm going to have to wait a bit to pick this one up. I've still got so much stuff that I'm working on. I've got Fable II, Dead Space, Lego Batman, Final Fantasy IV, Okami, and others. I want to make sure I get that stuff done before I start up another game, especially one with the time commitment this one will require.

Yeah, I've had several people come by my desk and asked "whats with the little kid lunch box?"
I'd leave the bobble head here but I know someone would steal it.

I played the beginning of the game during lunch, the character creation was really neat... but I wouldn't want to do it again. Like Oblivion you can totally redo your character before exiting the vault, so best to keep a save file there in case you want to start a new character in the future. I haven't progressed far enough to give any real impressions of gameplay, other then the ugly character faces :p

Oh yeah, I didn't think of that... I am really the only big gamer geek in this office, but ya never can be too careful...

There are a lot here. ;)

My office is almost entirely made up of women (who are definitely non-gamers) but I'm just paranoid one of them might think its cute and I'll come in one day and my cute little Pip-boy won't be nodding at me confidently anymore.

I'm heading home soon, I'll probably spend my entire trip home figuring out my S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes. For this initial run through I think I'll go with a fairly straight forward jack-of-all-trades approach and then come up with more unique characters once I learn more about how the game works.

I still have fond memories of going through Fallout 2 as my character named "The Hulk", a powerful melee brute with 10 strength, 10 Endurance and 1 Intelligence, 1 Charisma who could barely carry on a conversation with 95% of the NPCs in the game, but man did his fist pack a mean wallop. Good times.

To anyone with the lunchbox edition, did your Pipboy bobblehead come detached from the base? Mine did but you can slip it back on, so I don't know if it's broken or not...

^
Mine too...

I made my character, "Jack Shephard" sporting an ugly "Lost flash forward" beard. I was really impressed by the graphics the first time I stepped foot outside of the vault.

Yeah, the people at EB gutted a PS3 one and handed me a new doll. I guess it actually pays to be a "familiar" at a store.

I'm debating Melee or Small arms... anyone have any hints? :)

First thoughts after playing for an hour and a half or so (I'm in megaton, doing various quests)

Extremely immersive world - it's just gorgeous (and looks particularly gorgeous on my PC at max settings). Oddly, though, it has some of the worst character animations I've seen in at least three years. They're just laughably bad, particularly your own character. It's distractingly funny watching your character ice skate across the world in 3rd person view (needless to say I use first person) - and then, yes, the game is beautiful.

I'm definitely enjoying it so far. I'm in a quandry as to whether I should fix the bomb or blow it up (not really spoilerish - those who know the game will know what I'm talking about). I'm not sure how the Karma system will effect me later ... though I'm tempted to be a bit evil in the game.

I for one am having trouble getting into the universe right now. But they may have more to do with my massive backlog of real life items getting in my way...

OK, I'm on the verge of declaring a jihad on Bethesda and SecuROM for keeping me from playing my LEGAL copy of this game. I have been at this for several hours, and I have yet to get it to run on my computer. I have tried uninstalling any disk burning software I have (not much), without success, and even trying to uninstall secuROM without any difference.
