Dances with Wolves come to mind.

The Indians used all of the buffalo. One animal could feed and clothe a village for months. However when Whitey turned up, he slaughtered them by the herd, taking just the tongues.

Does the buffalo analogy still track?

To a point. Aliens aren't just not using 'the whole of the buffalo', they're pretty much sticking exclusively to one kind.

Although this may be the only case I can say that analogously comparing human children to buffalo tongues works.

It'll be interesting to see as the series progresses if they chose to do any flashbacks to the actual invasion itself and the characters' initial reaction to their arrival.
It's a good idea to do it that way. The formula for a new series - or any series/movie that hasn't been seen for some time - seems to devote time for character development. This is particularly true to personify alien characters. Flashbacks help a lot with this and obviously the film/series has to develop these for people new to the show, although can be boring for those of us who are familiar with it. A good reason to go with the first episode then hopefully get into the plot much more in the second and even 3rd episode. Enjoy!
