The list of fall sf/f series either officially picked up or close enough in the rumor mill. Asterisks indicate possible sf/f, not entirely clear, but worth noting on suspicion. After all, nobody thought Lost was going to turn out the way it has. Not a bad haul for genre TV considering how dire the networks' lineups look overall.

ABC

Flash Forward - The world gets a glimpse of their future; everyone copes as best they can. Notable cast: Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Sonya Walger.

V - Limited series (at least to begin with). Remake of paranoid alien invasion series. Notable cast: Elizabeth Mitchell, Alan Tudyk, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Morena Baccarin

*Happy Town - Murder mystery in Twin Peaks-ish town. Notable cast: Amy Acker, Dean Winters, Sam Neill.

FOX

Past Life - Cop show with reincarnation angle.

*Human Target - Master of disguise subs for clients in danger. Notable cast: Mark Valley, Jackie Earle Haley, Chi McBride

NBC

Day One - World gets blowed up real good; survivors cope. Notable cast: Xander Berkeley (Radioactive George himself!)

CW

Vampire Diaries - Sexy young vampires in love. Notable cast: Ian Sommerhalder and Steve McQueen's grandson.

CBS

Are you kidding? Sci fi scares them.

Skiffy - Sci fi also scares them, but they're still managing to churn out:

Caprica - Prequel to BSG, with double the tragic robot angst and no space battles. Notable cast: Esai Morales, Eric Stolz, Paula Malcolmson, Polly Walker.

Stargate: Universe - Stargate but dark! and gritty! and lost! Notable cast: Lou Diamond Phllips, Robert Carlyle, Ming-Na.

Warehouse 13 - Cross between Indiana Jones and The X-Files. Notable cast: CCH Pounder.
 
That's the best summary. Thanks. ABC's line-up sounds interesting but so far nothing that I'm really looking forward to. My optimistic side really wants to see Universe though but I think I'm going to be disappointed.
 
Well I'm interested in V mainly for the cast but that's about it. I'll check out Flash Forward and Day One but don't expect much. I have extremely low hopes for Caprica and Stargate:90210. I've never heard of this Warehouse show, if it actually had a budget it could be interesting, but it's on Sci-Fi so it'll probably be cheap as hell...
 
I already saw the Caprica DVD premiere, and thought it had potential though it sure isn't going to be a thrill-a-minute. The good points are the stellar cast and that it's a rarity on TV - a sci fi show dedicated to exploring sci fi concepts.

ABC also picked up:

Eastwick

Desperate Housewives, with witches rather than the other word. ;) Notable cast: Rebecca Romijn, Veronica Cartwright.

ABC is going pretty heavy into sf/f. :bolian:

I'll check out all the shows on that list. The ones I think I'll like: Happy Town and V. The ones I'll probably bail on quickest: Past Life, Day One, Warehouse 13 and Vampire Diaries. Eastwick is sounding more promising than I initially gave it credit for; I don't watch DH but the addition of the fantasy angle could make it fun. The ones I'll stick with longer than I should: Caprica even if it's a bit on the dull side because it's "real" sci fi, and Stargate: Universe because there ain't much space opera out there nowadays. :(

I should have mentioned Scott Wolf in the cast of V.
 
It's funny that ABC is going so sci-fi after Lost's first full out sci-fi season tanked in the ratings. If there isn't action I tend to get bored so I don't think I'm going to like Caprica.
 
It's probably worth pointing out that FLASH FORWARD is based on a novel by Robert Sawyer (from Tor Books!), and THE HUMAN TARGET is based on DC comic book series. I believe that THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is based on a series of young-adult novels by an author whose name escapes me . . . .
 
Thanks for the rundown. V, Flash Forward, SG: Universe and The Human Target are the ones that pique my interest. I hope a few of them can survive.
 
I agree with your assessment of Caprica, Temis. I was actually very impressed with the story and the acting when I saw it. The final scene, while predictable, was deeply disturbing. I really think that it is a show that has potential, although it should be done as an HBO-style series (meaning rated R) as Battlestar Galactica should have been.
 
I may have to check out Happy Town because Sam Neill is in it but otherwise the regular channels have little to offer. Gotta go to cable for good stuff be it sci-fi or otherwise.
 
Flash Forward, V, Happy Town, Day One, Caprica and Universe I'll definitely be checking out.

Most likely I'll also check out Human Target.

Past Life sounds $hit. Vampire Diaries sounds like True Blood meets 90210, no thanks.

I hope I'm not selling Caprica short by making it sound like a snooze-fest. :rommie: It did have some action and suspense (terrorism! conspiracy! murder!), it's just that it isn't the mile-a-minute thing that I think TV audiences often expect.

I was thinking about this and I think the difference is that Jericho focused on farmers, who at least have some realistic ability to fend for themselves, can live off the land, know how to use guns, etc. But tell the same story with city slickers and you gotta wonder how long they last without their frappucinos. ;)
 
^^ I thought that Caprica was pretty good, albeit very, very different to BSG. I think it took all of 30 seconds to realise that when they got into the VR Nightclub.

Day One/Jericho, I actually liked that the series was set in a small town rather than a city, however, you're right, it'll be interesting to see how the show differentiates itself from Jericho. I just feel that it's doomed to fail in my eyes, as any and all comparisons are likely to result in "It's not Jericho, it's not as good, I'm pi$$ed off......" :lol:
 
I think some of these sound interesting, but to be honest the last few years have taught me to judge nothing by the premise, or even the pilot episodes for that matter. Knight Rider had an "okay" movie and went downhill when they revamped it for a weekly series. Bionic Woman had a pretty good pilot and then just fell off a cliff.

On the other hand Invasion had a horrible first few episodes and then really picked up; a similar thing happened with Jericho.

I will probably just check out this board for all of your opinions before checking anything out.
 
Jericho started out ok, and then hit a sticky patch towards mid-season, before coming again towards the end of the season.

Invasion, started horribly and did itself considerable damage before it picked up again.
 
I liked the civil war scenario that Jericho got into in S2, which Day One won't have so meh on them. I wanted to see which states get the fighter jets and tanks, and who really would win in a fight.

Invasion needed to admit from the first that Sherrif Underlay was the lead character, not the hot park ranger guy, and focus on him and the fact that he's a frakkin alien invader and doesn't even know it, not on the hot park ranger guy's marital troubles (snore).

Now V has a chance to do this idea right even tho I don't think any of the Visitors are unaware of their identities, but at least one of em has interestingly divided loyalties, which is sort of where Underlay was going.

Funny how the old ideas are coming round again. Makes you wonder why networks bother to cancel shows at all.
 
For Invasion, I didn't mind them focusing on the park ranger, but boy did it take forever for that show to kick into gear, and by then it was too late.

The ABC lineup interests me for the casts as much as the series, I think each one has at least one performer whose name makes my ears perk up.

As to the talk about Invasion, it's interesting but I'm not sure what they were supposed to do. The mystery aspect was nicely played out in a slow burn way but I guess it wasn't obvious at the beginning they were going somewhere. I know I myself was frustrated by it but I hate to take them to task for trying to preseve some mystery and not spilling all the beans right at the beginning like so many shows. I really wished that and Surface had gotten another season.
