Fake DVD

Bob The Skutter

Complete Arse Cleft
In Memoriam
I just bought a (supposedly) new DVD from Amazon Marketplace, when it arrived yesterday morning it wasn't sealed, the case is a cheap flimsy thing that's breaking, or already broken in places, and there's a burnt smell, I've smelled the same thing on copied discs before. But the disc is a silver one, looks original, but somewhat low quality. Does anyone know of a way to verify whether or they are original discs?

I tried contacting the seller yesterday morning, about returning it and getting a refund but they haven't replied so far.

Verify? No. The sellers know damn well if they're selling legit or fake DVDs, so they're not going to tell you they're bootlegs. If you do get a response from the seller, it'll be some BS. Can you report them to Amazon?

To see if the DVD is real or not, maybe go to a video store and see what the disc looks like and compare.

What DVD is it?
X-Men 3 2 disc version.

I had thought I'd ordered it from Amazon but when I got the email it was from a marketplace seller. So I looked at their rating and it was something like 96%, so I thought they should be trustworthy enough, but after going through their feedback it appears a lot of the negative feedback says similar things, like "sold as new but came in broken case, no bits in the envelope so obviously packed that way", "not in described condition" etc.

Is it a pressed disc?

Although, I guess if you're a large scale pirater, you might have your own DVD pressing machine...

I think it is, it's certainly not a DVD-R. The thing is, the seller and item was supposed to be in the UK, but it came via airmail, so who knows where it came from.

I just caught that the other day on Amazon, i thought i was buying something from Amazon because it had the big buy now orange button thing which amazon have, but on closer inspection to the small writing below the big amazon buy now button it was a seller.........very sneaky of them.

Well here's what mine looks like

Thanks. It is the same labels, but the case is one of those cheap 10 for £1 you get in Pound shops, also the labels on the discs appear to be lower quality, like the corner of the X looks to have blue on it, and there are various other small imperfections.

Well, if you bought it from Amazon Marketplace (and by extension EBay) it already has a 70% chance of being booted I'd say.

How to spot someone trying to sell you a bootleg:
  • The disc is Region 0 or region "free". There are legal region zero discs but they're not all that common.
  • The disc has a Chinese Subtitle or audio track and isn't supposed to. (Lots of bootlegs are from Hong Kong)
  • Packaging shown is not consistant with the release in your country or non-existant. Coloring, artwork used etc. If there is no photo available to view what the product looks like it usually means they don't want you to see it.
  • Manufacturing and production company labels removed from jacket and discs.
  • Episode Count per disc or number of discs in the set (if applicable) is not consistant with the domestic manufacturer in your country. For instance if the series comes on 6 discs and you see a set that says there's only 3 that's a dead giveaway.

yes I dont like how they two parts of the site blend together.

I would hope Amazon would give you your money back, send them the disc and let them deal with the seller.

I got a bootleg copy of Nero from an Amazon marketplace vendor and I was able to get a complete refund.

I once ordered an X-Men TPB from a Marketplace seller, and instead I got a single issue of an X-Men comic and something that said it was a deed for land in "Hawai'i". The seller never responded to any of my emails, so I filed a complaint with Amazon and they refunded me.

That's the only time I've ever had an issue with the Amazon Marketplace.
