Fables TV series

Temis the Vorta

ABC developing Fables TV series.

Oy, didn't ABC notice that the fable-ish Pushing Daisies just got cancelled? By them?

The fantasy project, based on the comic book created by Bill Willingham and published by DC's Vertigo imprint, deals with characters from fairy tales and folklore living in exile in modern-day New York.
...

Big Bad Wolf and Snow White, who are central to the comics, will have a similar role on the show.

Anyone know what this comic book is like? Is it dirty (or at least a little sleazy?)

Who should be cast on this show? Lee Pace and Kristen Chenowith need to have some sort of roles.

Big Bad Wolf: Gary Busey or Ray Wise

Snow White: Zoe Deschanel

Don't let the whimsical-sounding premise fool you, it's darker in tone than Pushing Daisies.

I agree that HBO or Showtime would have been a better fit.

HBO is the only network that can do this series justice.

That said, Ian McKellen as Gepetto. IMO, Zooey Deschanel does not have the range to pull off this Snow White. My vote is Molly Parker. I also would be perfectly okay with Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Bigby.

If this does well, any chance of a Jack of Fables spin-off?

I havent read it all but it's done in a fairly serious manner, with a little humor and cleverness thrown in. HBO would be a great home for it.

YES! One of my favorite comics out there. I've always thought it would be perfect for a TV series. I agree that HBO would probably be a better home for it, but I'm very much willing to give this a shot.

And Fables is much different than Pushing Daisies. It may sound light and fluffy when you first hear about it (I was initially turned off by the concept), but you quickly realize there's a lot more to it than what's on the surface.

I'm at the point now where I don't even want to watch 'genre/niche' shows just because I know they're going to be cancelled 95% of the time anyway.

It's a great comic. It has lots of light touches, because of its nature, but at the very heart it is anything but light. Since a network show "based on" Fables is so broad as to mean anything, it will be interesting to see what approach and tone they bring to the show.

I love the books, but this is SO going to get canceled in like 5 episodes. I just don't see "mainstream" America being invested enough to follow the show for such a long time.

On the bright side, if it does get cancelled, it's not hard to find out what happens next. Fables is a great on-going, probably tied with Y: The Last Man for best series IMO since I got into comics 4 years ago.

I kind of wonder if the TV show will end up being a long commercial for the comics. But then again, I almost assume that the people who didn't know about the series before the TV series wouldn't even bother with the comics either way.
