Fable 3 official! (Molyneux - Gamescom '09)

I know it was given, and it's been heavily hinted at, all-but-confirmed by Peter himself and even accidentally confirmed by Jonathan Ross of all people.

But it was officially unveiled today (less than an hour ago at time of writing!) at Gamescom '09 http://www.mcvuk.com/news/35458/Fable-3-officially-announced

Details from the conference are trickling out over Twitter. Can't wait. I hope it's as big an improvement to the franchise as Fable 2 was over Fable.

I wonder if we'll get a hint of the release date... EDIT: I gather he said "Late 2010 at the earliest", or words to that effect.

The one thing I really really hope for is an improved story. If they can pull that off and make me care about the characters then I will be satisfied

Fable 2 may very well be my favorite game for 360, I'm a huge fan. Really looking forward to the next one!

Thanks for the lowdown Jim!

You're welcome!

Can't wait. I'm so excited about this, and the return of Zoe Wanamaker as the narrator makes me wonder if... you know who will still be around (which is probably a safe bet, considering how old she was by the 2nd game).

This ties in with the what Molyneux said about the game centreing around being the ruler of Albion - but it won't have any RTS or micro-management elements, instead you'll be a "hero king/queen". He likened the role to Captain Kirk - you're in charge, but you still have adventures.

By the end of Fable 2, it's quite easy to become king/queen - and own 99% of the property in the gameworld. Which is fine and dandy, except... you don't really do anything in your capacity as a ruler. In fact the game even tells you that it's little more than a ceremonial title. Looks like the new game will address that, taking Fable 2 to its ultimate conclusion. I like the idea.

Personally i intend to follow the development of Fable 3 as little as possible. Fable 2 was pretty disappointing but that was largely due to it not living up to its hype. So i plan on avoiding said hype for Fable 3.

As you mentioned on twitter about playing as your Fable 2 character's child, that makes sense considering the whole Visions of the Future thing you were shown at the ending of the latest DLC where you have the child and you must protect them. What was their name? Aurora or something?

Listen to absolutely nothing this man says about Fable 3 unless it sounds like something he's already done before. ;)

Fable 3 will be Fable 1 and 2 with the usual sequel enhancements: more of this, more of that. But basically the same game you've already played. That's fine, and I like Fable, I just take what Peter Molyneux promises with a grain of salt until I see what he delivers. What he delivers is usually 50-75% of what he says he will accomplish, so we'll see.

I still think the Populous games are perhaps the best ones he created. Way better then B&W. Fable is a great action-adventure-rpg series though, I like them more than the latest Zelda games in fact, but they're not revolutionary.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for taking Peter "Bullshitting Since 1994" Molyneux with a TARDIS full of salt. But I hated Fable 1. Fable 2 I loved, it was a vast improvement, and in many ways a different game at the core.

It didn't quite live up to the hype (what game does?) but he didn't oversell it anywhere near as much as he did with the first game.

My biggest problem with Fable 2 actually is how shit the DLC has been.

So... another game where we're supposed to pretend that farting at people represents some sort of meaningful social interaction, then?

So... PM thinks the RPG mechanic has been around too long so he's going to chuck it out and replace it with the brand spanking new idea of:

You're ruler of a fantasy country.

OK. Never heard that one before, have we...?

Dungeon Keeper was his best game IMO. I still love that one.

That and Majesty are probably my two favorite RTS (though in a way, they are more sim than RTS)

Yet another RPG from that guy that needs years more development time than he's giving it. Fable 3 shouldn't have been announced for another couple years.

Theme Park is my favourite, personally.

I haven't played any of the Fable games, but honestly after B&W and The Movies, I'm really burned on on Molyneux. His games just never live up to the promise, not even in the slightest.

I liked Fable 2, but I'm unsure I'll be making this a priority purchase when it's released. I've not bothered with any of the DLC either.

I dunno, I knew it would be a matter of time before they announced a third game, but I'm really skeptical about this one. Becoming a king? Okay that sounds fun in theory, but a silent protagonist as a king?
