I view them as sentient as well. I guess I think it'd be interesting if we got more opportunities (in the books) to explore the symbionts themselves. I think it'd be an interesting conflict to explore between the two conceptions of Dax and how they influence the host. By two conceptions, I mean: Dax, the symbiont itself and its feelings, rather than Dax, the aggregate composite of multiple lifetimes, memories, and experiences. Um, maybe that makes sense.

On topic: Ezri or Sarina - Neither. Not interested in Bashir with either of them. Just interested in Bashir :).

yeah it makes sense actually. but wasn't exploring the symbiont the reason julian and ezri broke up?

^Yeah, about that...

It struck me as...unfortunate that Ezri had decided in the relaunch to effectively ditch her previous resolution to set herself apart from her previous hosts. I thought that that difference from Jadzia helped define her, and was a nice bit of complexity on her part.

I never understood why the writers ditched that. (Maybe they just were used to Jadzia, and didn't want to take the time...?)

Hmm, I don't know. I mean, is the symbiont within its host really completely knowable, even by the host? When Ezri or Jadzia refer to an experience related to Dax, they usually seem to be reaching through Dax to another host; I suppose it's like they're sifting through something that is easier, and many ways necessary for stability, to conceptualize as a whole (through Dax, the touchstone) rather than just the symbiont. It's like Dax is just an intersection between host lifetimes. I certainly don't think that's the end or the limit of Trill understanding or feeling about the symbionts, but it's the usual way that it's presented to the audience. So, you've got the host, the symbiont, and where they converge for better or worse. I guess I have an interest in the symbiont itself (though it's obviously difficult to separate it from the hosts). Just a curiosity that hasn't been completely sated.

I think Ezri's exploration of the symbiont was necessary for the character. I don't mind that she and Bashir broke up, for any reason. I like them both better apart than together. I'm waiting until I read the upcoming book involving Sarina to form an opinion about her.
