The prob is that as a diabetic I can't get the usual cortison infusion - it'd make my blood sugar levels go through the roof and catapult me into the high risk group. If by Monday it persists, I'll get an injection with a lower dose of cortison directly through the ear drum (oh joy!)

I know what you mean. I decided to let the doc inject my painful knee with cortisone to possibly avoid surgery, and it was a bad, stupid decision for me. I wish I had been smart enough to tell him to go with a lower dose. My blood sugar skyrocketed to pre-diagnosis levels. I mean, over 400. The knee injection wasn't so bad, but in the ear drum....yikes! Fingers all crossed for you.
