Excelsior Night Shift Comm Officer

Herbert1

Captain

Was the night shift communications officer, who woke up Captain Sulu, portrayed by Christian Slater, ever given a name in Star Trek literature? I understand that they originally intended Grace Lee Whitney playing Commander Rand to wake up Sulu in the middle of the night. It helps that your mother is the casting director.

I don't believe that he was given a name. I also checked Memory Beta and couldn't find one.

The novelization still has Rand waking Sulu. Page 198.

The Fearful Summons (I know, I know) had a junior communications officer on Excelsior named Russel Roose, and I'd always assumed that he was supposed to be Slater's character. Don't know if I had any basis in fact for that, though; it's been a very long time.

I remember that seeming so 'cool' back in 1991...having Slater in a Trek movie. Now if he was to be in one it would probably be somewhat depressing.

Ah, yes, I remember thinking the same!

I happened to mention that book, as an oft-loathed title, over on a listerv to which I belong, and someone protested they quite liked it. For me, it's just one of those novels I remember reading, but don't really recall the plot and don't remember having an aversion to Flinn's writing style.

When there was a possibility of a Sulu Excelsior series, I wanted Takei in the center seat, opening and closing the show with Captain's Logs and words of wisdom, while Christian Slater and his Away Team got their shirts torn and hearts broken on strange new worlds.
::sigh::
:(
