Excelsior captain holding something in SFS

Perhaps Kirk pulled some strings to get Styles in instead of Sulu in order to protect Sulu. If Sulu succeeds in stopping Kirk than Spock is dead, if Sulu fails it will appear as though he did it on purpose and his career is over.

Of course, this only works if Kirk was planning to steal the Enterprise from the get-go. But it's possible he is sufficiently well-versed in bureacracy to know Morrow won't say "yes" when he asks.
The only problem with that theory is that Styles was already captain of the Excelsior when they pulled into spacedock. They didn't know they were going to have to steal the ship and go back to Genesis until later. And while Morrow didn't mention Styles by name when he reassigned Scotty, you'd figure if he was going to promote Sulu, he'd have done it there as well.

It's a cheerleader spirit stick...and it must NEVER touch the ground. Who's with me? YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! :D

No one's made an off color remark about 'showing a cheerleader his spirit stick' yet?

OK, guess I'll do it.

Styles goes up to the Asian woman on the bridge:

"You know your twin sister didn't want to see my spirit stick either. I busted her down to science vessel duty. So I'll ask you again..."

You haven't read "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?"

I see. That would be correct.

And here I thought an Elder Wand was something Republican law-makers offer to congressional pages and under-cover cops.

Clinton offered one to Monica Lewinsky, but only because he hated Voldemort. ;) back atcha!

(Who woulda guessed the stain was a whore--I mean, horcrux!)

I was trying to be bi-partisan. Hard for a yellow dog dem... (And I ain't never read no Harry Potter, neither!)

But hey, back ot: that crazy guy in TSFS! He had a stick! A STICK!

I can not picture him defeating a Klingon.

It's probably just a beatin' stick, like WWE's Finley and his chileley.....however ya spell it. :P

That or it's where Styles keeps his chocolate when he
gets the munchies.
 :D

Interestingly enough, I just scanned through the portions of Vonda McIntyre's TSFS novelization, and nowhere does she mention Styles' riding crop/swagger stick, or where he obtained it.

So much for that theory. :p

"in the novelization, the implement is a swagger stick that he took off a Klingon after defeating him in hand to hand combat, and he carried as a status symbol."

In the first chapter of Prime Directive (set after Turnabout
Intruder, and Yesteryear), the Enterprise has had her nacelles wrecked, and Scotty is gazing upon her sadly. Styles swaggers up, and Scotty recalls to himself The Klingon/Swagger Stick Incident tm.

The explanation of the origin of the Swagger stick isn't in the Star Trek III novelization.

Side note: His great grandfather was part of the first crew of the USS Daedulus in 2161. (Starfleet Year One)

Which Styles/Stiles? The ancestors of Andrew Stiles (TOS) were active participants in SFY1.

Still dosen't make him any less of a pompous ass for carrying the damn thing around everwhere he went.

Compensating.
