Examples of Sisko's parenting

"EXPLORERS" and "IN THE CARDS" are two of my favorites of the series because of the father/son story in the former, and how Jake just wanted to do something nice for his dad in the latter. Sometimes the simplest story/plot can be among the very best tv one can watch.

The Siskos on a trip. Jake tries to buy a baseball card.

I imagine those episodes were pitched as just a single sentence like that, and they were both wonderful episodes.

One of DS9's strengths was its ability to have 'day in the life' episodes like those and not feel like it's just tacked on or boring.

I agree. Most of the time I loathe this parent-child stuff on TV because usually it's pretty superficial/stupid/clichéd/annoying. TNG didn't give the best examples of engaging parent-child themes either. Ben and Jake however, even I find that lovely to watch, it's a great display of an often disagreeing but still deeply loving relationship. Ben is a great father and Jake is a great son--it was a wise decision to let Jake not be a prodigy Mary Sue but a fairly normal teenager.

It was greatly done early on how Ben wanted Jake to stay away from Nog, he always preached tolerance and acceptance but suddenly felt uncomfortable when it was about his own son being under the supposed bad influence of a Ferengi kid. How he changed his mind after watching Jake helping Nog learning to read was great character development.
