EW Article

I just pulled the new issue of Entertainment Weekly from the mailbox to find Johnny Depp on the cover and an article about the 'must-see' movies of this summer. Even though I know that EW did an article about Trek back in November, I was stunned to find no mention of it at all in the summer line-up.

Anyone else as surprised as I was?

That might be because Star Trek is released in early May. What would be the cut-off for a "summer" movie?

Procutus, I don't see the article you mention in the online EW (they have a gallery for "12 Hot 2009 Movies") but guess whose face is the first that comes up on the "Rising Stars: Nine to Watch" feature?

(The big Trek article and cover feature was in October, not November, btw)

Are you referring to this list? Or is there another specific to summer releases? (Which May is usually considered part of by Hollywood. Hell they'd push it back to January if they thought it would help generate more revenue.)

They listed Watchmen (March 6), The Ugly Truth (April 3rd), Wolverine (May 1), and [gulp] JONAS BROTHERS: THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE (February 27).

Well, fuck me, Entertainment Weekly. I guess Trekkies can just suck it, huh?

Seriously, the JONAS Brothers?

May is usually considered the beginning of the Summer movie season.

Weird that after doing a huge feature months ago, they somehow forget about the film already??

Summer movie season runs from the first weekend of May through
the end of August. September is the start of the Fall season.
Around thanksgiving is the begininng of the "Holiday" season,
end of February/March would be the start of Spring season.

That's how we had it when I worked at Regal.

Who really cares anyways? That magazine sucks.

Maybe they didnt have it because Trek moved to May and it was already mentioned for the holidays.

I suspect the explanation is as simple as different people writing articles. To the person who wrote the 'hottest movie list' or whatever it is, Star Trek may be something to be sniffed at/dismissed. Unlike whoever was responsible for the feature in the earlier issue. General entertainment magazines like this suffer from writer bias like this all the time, Empire does it too.

Shrugs. I'd rather have the cover story and feature article that was in EW back in November than be mentioned alongside anything even remotely related to the Jonas Brothers.

Generally speaking, EW is a big booster of all things Abrams, and has been a booster of Trek in the past. (They had at least one TNG cover back in the day.) I am sure the movie will get plenty of coverage in the magazine as we get closer to May. And for those of you who dismiss EW, like it or not, it has far more potential to influence the success of this movie by building buzz (positive or negative) than a thousand writeups in any genre magazines.

That's true. They had DS9 on the cover when it first came out with B5 as the table of contents pic. Reading their coverage for both space station shows, the story felt slanted toward supporting the Trek juggernaut than the then-newest space series on the block.

Same thing when they did a comparison of the two pilots.

Well, they mentioned Harry Potter for summer, and it got moved after Trek did.

Go figure.

Yeah, I agree. I've no doubt that the Paramount publicity machine will be operating at full warp speed for the new Trek flick when May rolls around.

Does the article you talked about in your OP also appear in the online version of EW? I didn't see anything labeled as "Summer Lineup" but I'm not curious enough to go out and actually buy a copy at the newsstand to find out.

I haven't checked their online articles yet. And save your money, the magazine itself isn't all that informative. Very small previews of the films in question.
