Evil Airplane designers :)

I know economy-class passengers complain about being packed in like sardines, but this idea takes it literally.

Yeah, but if airline companies actually use this, people can't die because they can't get out fast enough after a crash (assuming they survived), there could be lawsuits.

It is already a peeve point for me that the crew gets shoulder belts, but not the passengers.

And it's already hard enough to get out of the seats as is. We don't need to make it even harder.

Aviation has always drawn the oddballs.

The Short Mayo two stage Flying Boats--various seat packing schemes for blended wing body designs with no windows, etc.

For an example of Air Force hubris: http://up-ship.com/blog/?p=28352

In Vietnam, pilots named their planes Spads, Thuds--and perhaps the best of all, a Jet Cessna trainer pressed into service as a ground attack aircraft lovingly referred to as the Super Tweet.

This is a mock up from the company btw, the seats fold up (which explains how you get in/out, thought I'd like to see how quickly you can do that in an emergency

!)

Well the design solution for that would be they are normally in an upright position unless in use.

That being said, I'm not keen on this idea for a seat layout, not saying it doesn't have merit i.e maybe for parents with children.

There aren't even armrests? So the armrests are literally other people's thighs?

You know what sounds awesome? Taking off backwards. I'm sure that won't make everyone vomit profusely.

It's not like you can really use armrest on planes today anyway, they are far too narrow for people to share.

But if it's extra capcity on short haul flights they are after could they do a double decker A320 based on the A380.

Captain Scarlet used to always drive sitting backwards and he was just fine...of course he was also a puppet...

There is no way this would ever be allowed for health and safety reasons. Only the aisle passengers could get out quickly in an emergency. Also, think of the air rage incidents this seating arrangement would cause. And the deep veined thrombosis.

Not sure on the DVT front, apparently the designers are suggesting this would allow people 15% more space!

The health and safety concerns will kill this off though.

You people are so negative. I see this as a marketing opportunity! Playboy Airlines offers you the chance to fly and cop a feel at the same time... all on a budget!

Well it could be a marketing plan

Exec 1: The designers have come up with this new concept for seating on planes.

Exec 2: That's too radical people will never accept it

Exec 3: They will if we publish this even more outlandish design, After this they'll thing anything is better.

I love this

The comments alone are gold. One person suggested escape capsules in first class so if a plane is delayed and is flying over a 1st class passengers home they can be ejected and parachute down.

And there's this

This one's good. futuristic capsules to fly in. Oooh purple too.

It might look cool, but I see people in first class drowning as the plane sinks, because they couldn't get out and down from their seats fast enough.

And I would be so pissed if only the first class gets ejection seats, and only they would get to live if something goes wrong! I want an ejection seat too!

Maybe more effort should be spent on trying to replace fossil fuels as the fuel source? Then the aircraft can be made wider, there wouldn't be such a need to reduce weight as much as possible, and there'd be more space as a result for seats!

For me, an ideal seat is well bolstered, has ample padding, but is also relatively easy to get out of, if need be.

fit those sorts of seats to any aircraft and watch it's airworthiness certificate fly out the window.

As part of the certification process, airliner manufactures have show that the aircraft can be evacuated in a certain period of time.

Seats like what's being discussed here would make increase the evac time.

Must be pushing things as it is with the new high density seating some airlines are starting to employ.
