every screen in Disco is in night mode

That scene felt very TOS to me
Same here. They even had it pause and subtly stutter as it "worked"! It certainly didn't do anything it was established as not being able to do in TOS, so far as I recall.

Let's also not forget that the Enterprise's computer in "Wolf In The Fold" (TOS) could act as an infallible lie detector! What ever happened to that ability thereafter (or before, for that matter)?:vulcan:

Kirk also used the computer in 'Mirror, Mirror' to figure out if ion storms mixed with a transporter could cause you to cross universes. 100% speculative idea.

Though now that I think about it, Mirror Kirk could have had access to the Empire's records on Lorca's crossovers, so when Prime Kirk used Mirror Kirk's computers it already had that information.

But. In the context of every series except DSC, that was impressive for a computer.

They would only need to use day mode if they were in a planet's atmosphere, right? I don't think we ever saw that.

Who says they are?

Just because of what the screens look like? That's hardly definitive. Seriously, I don't think we ever saw an actual computer screen during all of TOS. Characters would TALK to the computer, but we never see a screen.

Indeed, that's one way TOS' computers are more advanced than those in DSC. The TOS computer can talk and respond to voice commands. As far as we know, the ones in DSC can't.

I was kidding. I was parodying the various comments about Discovery's apparent technological advancements over TOS.

I think that might be an AM/PM designation. I mean, the ship should really be using military time, but production designers aren't always that savvy. And really only 5-12 (am/pm) fit the proper symbol.

Interesting detail. I wonder if it maybe also comes with reduced power consumption. In certain cases, night mode also means power conservation with lighting dimmer than in daytime use.

...Although why a starship would wish to conserve power remains difficult to comprehend.

Even if the day mode consumed, say, five million times more power than the night mode, it shouldn't even register in overall power consumption. Starships aren't short on power, and do not mind power consumption as a thing - it's never a factor in deciding what warp speed to maintain, say (only things like ETA or wear and tear on hardware are).

To be sure, the computer didn't appear to do more than today's polygraphs, and even considered it necessary to keep pointing out that its lie-detecting hinged on sensing of physiological changes. Claims of "infallibility" (none were made, but the implication hung heavily over the proceedings) would probably fail to impress anybody but the Argelians, and the functionality would not help much with plots internal to our bunch of heroes or involving more urbane villains.
