Ever wish the crew would call the DR. on all his BS?

Not true, R2-D2 & C-3PO believe they are sentient but aren't, they're just programmed to mimic human behavior. Droids are built to be property, therefore aren't sentient beings.
How do you know they're not sentient? That they're property is irrelevant: we see from example that slaves are kept in the Star Wars universe.

Frankly, the Star Wars saga makes a rather good bit more sense if you suppose that Artoo is the supreme Jedi master.

Every book, dictonary, visual guide, blurb, etc. offically licenced by Lucas' company says so. 4-LOM is one of the very few droids in the Star Wars universe that actually is sentient.

Plus, R2 & 3PO don't meet all the requirements of sentient life as described in TNG's "The Measure of Man".

Exactly! He really was just a tool. I don't believe he was ever truly sentinent...he may have thought he was and tried to act like he was but in reality he really was just a computer program.

Do you think the same thing about Data?

Whenver the bald bastard stepped out of line they should have DELETED some of his rebellious subroutines to turn him back into a good little tool.

Blame it on Kes.

It was her crazy little girl ideas that got everyone thinking he was real.

Ah. I was unaware that this was stated in official Lucas pravda; I've only seen the movies.

... What requirements would those be? Maddox attempted to put forth ``intelligence, self awareness, consciousness'', but Maddox is an alleged expert in artificial intelligence who apparently has never heard of the Turing Test, and the episode makes clear there's not legal precedent. Anyway, I don't see what of those conditions they don't meet, or at least that they fall any shorter on than Luke does.

Isn't the ability to reproduce a requirment too?

I should hope not. If it were, then every post-menopausal woman would suddenly cease to be a person, and I'm certain no rational person would suppose that. (Any male with a vasectomy, or anyone sterile for any reason -- voluntary or not -- would be similarly stripped of person-hood through that standard.)

Forget it, talking about this isn't going to lead anywhere.

P.S. All the types you mentioned still have sex organs which are designed for procreation. Menapause or sterility don't negate that.

I believe you are thinking of the requirements for something to be considered living, not the requirements to be considered sentient.

Edit: My view is that the Doctor was sentient but he should have have been called him on his BS. If a human crewmember pulled half the crap he did they would be spending the return to the AQ on the brig.

So when we state something is sentient, what exactly are we asking?

Formally? One or both of two things:

a) That it can feel sensations. The lowest worms fit in this category.

b) That it is aware of self, as separated from the rest of the universe. I challenge you to show me a cat that doesn't meet this criterion.

In turn, when we state something is sapient, we are stating that he or she be member of the species Homo sapiens sapiens, obviously. The concept of sapience was invented to separate us from animals in the first place.

It's just too bad that the definition has no utility value.

I like the Doctor. The only times he REALLY ticked me off was when tried to be a holo novelist, and the time he almost abandoned his crewmates to pursue a singing career. In both cases though, I belive he was definitely called on his stupidity.

Well, Dr. Zimmerman did program him to have his personality and ego.

Why did they put up with him for seven years? At the end of the day he really was just a tool...a projection from a machine and yet they indulged him in all his eccentric behavior. Frankly he could have used a good bitch slapping from time to time.

LOL!!!! Well in "Parralex", the DR. was being treated like a hypospray. :) Anyway, no I don't think the Doc deserved any bitch slapping. It was Harry Kim who deserved it. But that's another story. I really enjoyed the Doc cause I'm so much like him that it's not even funny. Sometimes I feel underutilized like the Doc, and also that I'm being used as a hypospray or a tool rather than a person. So I'd be pretty ticked off too if people thought of me as a too rather than a person(even if he is a holographic projection). :) You should read his Hologram Handbook. You'd think otherwise about bitch slapping him. :)

By the time of "Author, Author" I thought the doctor had become an ungrateful bitch in need of a serious smackdown. But his arrogance and self-centeredness before that were simply hilarious. :D

The Doctor did receive a serious smackdown in "Author, Author" . . . in the hands of one Thomas Eugene Paris.

I thought he was a wooden statue...

I have two words to say to this statement: SHUT...UP! No offense and yes you are entitled to your own opinions, but this Chakotay bashing is getting really OLD and needs to STOP! I know he was underutilized and spent most of his time on the bridge, but jeez! Give the guy a break for crying out loud! He was not a wooden statue..what a stupid thing to say about a person. How would you like it if I called you a dipstick for saying that(mods please don't penalize me here). That is rude and inconsiderate to all the Chakotay fans out there and hurts my feelings(I happen to be a HUGE Chakotay fan!). So, STOP! There's an ole saying that I will say to all the Chakotay bashers out there: "If you can't say somethin' nice...don't say nothin' at all!" :) I'm not trying to be offensive in anyway but I would like the Chakotay bashing to go on the down-low..PLEASE!

Ahem..anyway, I thought the Doc's self centered attitude was downright hilarious..especially in "Tatoo" where he gave himself the flu to see what it was like. It cracked me up. :)

One warning for flaming.

Comments to PM.

After Iden's revolt was done with, I could almost swear that the Doctor seemed disappointed at not being somehow punished, as though that would have made him a real member of the crew, and not just a protected experiment of sorts.

Does a cat know it's a cat?

Is it aware of it's place in the world or is it just living on instinct?

...and too shake things up a bit: if the EMH is just a tool, is Odo just jello?
