Ever felt unsafe in an "enemy" team's stadium?

^ True dat. And sometimes it's not even a game; I found that out at Citi today where everyone in my section was paying sole attention to the drunk couple fighting ten rows below us. We even had our own play-by-play going ("She finished her second beer...now she connects with a slap to the jaw...").

What do you think of Citi? I went there the year it opened, and while the sight lines and food selection were great, I thought the angles were odd and blocky, and it seemed remarkably sterile, more Dodger centric than Mets.

I haven't been back since, as it's a couple states away, and I've heard they've changed it around a bit, so I was wondering what you think of it.

I'm really up for a ballgame. I bought some Pats tickets the other day, and realized it's been 2 1/2 years since I went to a baseball game. I'd love to take one in at some point, but my wife is football crazed, so that's where we usually end up.

^ I like Citi a lot. Except for the overly large ads around the diminutive video boards.

It is more Metsish now. They did some modifications - added more orange and blue, lots of player posters in the parking lot, the Mets Hall of Fame, little things like that.

And I fraking love the Keith Hernandez burger...

On a slightly unrelated note: Juventus actually played a football (yes, soccer) game in Citi Field 2 weeks ago. I thought the stadium sucked from what I saw on tv.

And most of all: Do matches really get suspended for bad weather regularly? I mean, it was just some rain!!! Football games never get suspended in Europe unless there's a nuclear bomb exploding nearby.

That was probably because it was hosting a sport it was not designed for. Which is usually the case (baseball parks don't look good at all when you try and force football or soccer into them). When it's used for baseball, it's very nice.

And yes, baseball games are frequently delayed by rain. That's due to the nature of the game itself. You can play football in the rain, but not baseball.

Matches occasionally get cancelled in winter here when there's a lot of snowfall, especially since I think there are still stadiums without heating under the field and when the ground is frozen through and through it's just too dangerous to play.

And the soccer pitch is (sort of) still visible on the field...

I don't know why it was so important that they use Citi. There's a perfectly good soccer arena (for the Red Bulls) not too far away. I wonder why they didn't use that.

^ It could be because they wanted a stadium that seats more than 25,000 with a big European club playing a game. That said, I'd still think it would be easier to convert Meadowlands or something were that the case.

haven't read the whole thread, I used to live near Glasgow, and when Celtic and Rangers were playing we got the hell out of Dodge. We eventually moved to another town further away and Crom help us, it was all "Glasgow Overspill" (they tore down the tenements and moved the residents into housing in this town) so you'd to keep your head down and mouth shut on match days. You could, literally, be beaten or stabbed to death and there wouldn't be any witnesses.

Well I have just spent three days in Boston for the Yankees/Redsox series and I am very happy to report that I never, not once, felt unsafe anywhere in the city even though I had Yankee gear on the whole time. Apart from the occasional catcall yelled from a passing car, nobody ever gave me any trouble. I like Boston a lot (a friendly local even helped me when I got lost on the way out of the science museum*), and of course Fenway Park was really cool. Had an awesome time when I was there. Yankee fans are treated well at Fenway (there were more than I thought there'd be!), so if any are reading this, go ahead and go.

* It was because the Science Park T station was shut down and I couldn't find the shuttle bus back to North.

I deserved that, BTW. Because of course I wildly overreacted (when I first started this thread) as usual.

I wasn't kidding about my appreciation for Fenway though. I really do like it a lot. Except for the cramped seating (which is understandable, given the age of the ballpark and the size of myself) and the snotty PA announcer, I thoroughly enjoyed the place. Probably my favorite part was the food. The smell of it as you walk through the place, and the taste of the hotdogs. I suspect that the reason the beer was relatively affordable is that the portions were smaller though. But that's a minor nitpick at best.

All in all I had a great time. Plus, Carlton Fisk *and* Kevin Millar were there for all three games.

I'm even guessing a few other scandalous Yankee fans made the trip through the haunted forests and snow capped mtns that separate the Empire of New York from the People's Republic of Boston. It's a big city, people have other things to worry about than what your t-shirt says. Like say, getting to work on time.

Sorry for the bump, but...

Having just spent three days in Philadelphia I must say that while Citizens Bank Park is very nice, their fans are another story. Quite nasty, I think. If you have any gear on that isn't from a Philly team, look out... I thought all that crap went away when Veterans Stadium did. Boy, was I wrong.

Now don't get me wrong, I still had a good time, but the next city I visit I will do a lot more homework to prepare. And perhaps leave my team colors at home.

(Total contrast from Camden Yards, which is where I was for the preceding three days. Everyone in Baltimore was very friendly.)
