Rubbish!

I'm with Locutus. (Well, except I'm actually serious.) This ship basically has "deathtrap" tattooed on its forehead. And on its neck, and on its arm....

And let's put spikes around the black hole generator, just to create "tension" about whether anyone will get impaled.

Remember Helath and Safety doesn't exist in the future, just look as those deathtraps that the Federation uses. Exploding consoles, have these people not heard of circuit breakers/fuses.

Come on, guys. Spikes are the key to FTL travel. That's why we haven't achieved it in real life yet. Not enough spikes. Get your heads out of your asses.

"Captain, I cannae change the laws of physics. We need more spikes!"

Event Horizon - undeniably flawed, but looks and sounds great, with lots of atmosphere and strong performances. The exterior of the ship was mostly unmemorable, but I liked the "hammerhead" front section. The spikes in the black hole chamber could be easily explained. More easily than the ornamental pool, anyway! The long corridor was reminiscent of The Black Hole, I thought.

My explanation for what happened is that the ship entered a universe where people "see" by detecting emotions rather than light.

A very unique ship, not many designers have used a gothic cathedral as a basis for creating a futuristic ship. I guess when you’re building something revolutionary you want it to look memorable, still if I’d been a crew member I might have wondered what I was letting myself into, even before the ship went to hell!

Quick shout out to the wonderfully functional Lewis and Clark as well.

It’s not perfect but I love this film, one of the best sci-fi horrors ever made and I really thought Paul W.S. Anderson was going to go on to bigger and better things…er…

He'll never be a big name, but I did like the Resident Evil films he directed (he didn't do 2 or 3), the Death Race remake, and his steampunk take on The Three Musketeers.

I kind of suspected that Dr. Weir designed the Event Horizon that way on purpose - meaning, that he was always kind of evil, and that's why he fell so easily as depicted in the film.

This movie put me off going into a terrifying new dimensions where you have to pull out your own eyes.

The Romulans aboard those Warbirds better watch out.
Don't those things have some kind of black hole drive or other.

Actually the design makes some sense--keep the engine far in the back.

It actually looks a bit Klingon.

Off Topic:

I was thinking about Klingon designs the other day, and even the D-7 began to make a little sense to me.

The concave manta where the neck ties into?

That can be thought of as a dish.

The cobra head? A feed horn.

I remember seeing a description of the Tau Mission where the main body was the feed horn

The ship for SOLARIS has a bit in common with Event Horizon

It looks like a warp ring--that should be filled in with a dish for and aft--and a telescoping nose might be a good overall design.

It doesn't so much have a black hole core as some weird superdense fluid suspended as a sphere that when the spiny things....spin, it creates an extremely powerful gravitational well that can open a wormhole ahead of the ship.

Because...science, apparently.

I liked the creepy atmosphere in the Event Horizon. At first, this was somewhat restrained, so you had a (disquieting) mystery instead of an immediate threat.

I know it's got it's problems, but I think Event Horizon is one of the finest sci-fi horror movies ever made. I saw it three times in the theatre. It's worth watching for the set design alone, and I think the FX still hold up very well. Great performances by all the cast too.

There's even some well judged humour in there - 'This ship is fucked' or when Miller finally sees the ships logs, images of people tearing each other apart - his delivery of 'we're leaving' is just perfect, to name but a couple.

Very genre savvy, must have taken a leaf out of Ripley's play book. "I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure."

"Fuck laymans terms, do you speak English?"

Also the look on Sean Pertwee's face as Sam Neill explains wormhole travel using a pen and a page from his porn mag

Yes, because the ASTRONAUT hasn't got the slightest clue about wormhole theory. I thought that was the weakest part of the film.

These were essentially space truckers and first responders with the exception of the doctors, engineer, and captain, and travel between planets was relatively routine and not restricted to the elite in their field. There's no reason your paramedic would need to be familiar with wormhole theory.

Yup, they team was there to secure the EH and if necessary, patch up any survivors.

In the event of a dead crew, Sam Niel's character was just to secure the core, and leave the team to salvage the ship.
