+1 though I think the dumbing down trend applies to all decades, but its probably reaching its apex of crassness right now in this decade. Not that this is the end of the world. Its a prelude to the major paradigm shift which is approaching.
Awful decade, here's why:
- Music: Gangsta rap, generic emo trash, nu-metal. All the good music from this decade sounds like it could've come from the 90s.
- Movies: One pointless generic summer blockbuster after another, I can count the number of memorable movies on my fingers. The 90s had far better movies.
- Internet: Evolved, while it's users devolved. The age of the crappy Web 2.0 social networking sites. I preferred the internet of the 90s when dial-up was king, it took hours to download anything and the average user wasn't completely brain dead.
- Silly "WAR ON TERROR OMG" nonsense.
- Silly "WAR ON DRUGS OMG" nonsense.
- The world of 1984 coming to fruition.
- No good Trek.

I listen to a lot of today's music on the radio, especially when driving for long distances (such as today). Much of it is incomprehensible stuff that the Yoof of Today™ will get and understand, while the rest is bland Emperor Wogan friendly stuff that wouldn't harm an iPod Nano. Much like any other decade, however, there is some gold to be found among the dross that no doubt will stand the test of time and change the way music evolves, for better or for worse - whichever that is of course is highly subjective. The difference between now and then, of course, is that anyone can make music much more easily than back in, say, the 60s (we have the means to make and distribute music much more easily at a domestic "bedroom" level), and also have a good chance of success no matter how fleeting.
Perhaps it is nostalgia and the preservation of our own values, but every generation perceives the modern music of their time as worse than the good old days.

Personally, the mash-up renaissance in pop music this decade is proof that modern music artists still have a sense of humour, even though the record companies don't. 
People who think the music in this decade has sucked obviously have only listened to what radio and MTV(when it plays music) are playing. I have to admit that the majority of the artists I listen to are from 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. There's been a few additions to my list of fave artists and they're from the noughties.
I don't listen to the radio or watch MTV and I still think the majority of music from this decade sucks, at least in my opinion. There's alot of 00s music in my playlist, in proportion with other decades, but that's mainly due to the fact that I don't have the complete discography of certain 60s/70s/80s/90s artists that I'd like to have, whereas I have every single album from this decade that I actually want to own.
Perhaps the issue is due to the fact that the music I'm into was more popular in the mainstream in those days and that's why more good music (at least, music that's good to me, it's a subjective thing) came from those decades. Who knows.

I think the 2000s were decent enough to warrant a sequel. In fact, I envision a whole 9-part franchise.
It will involve 3 prequels, though. I wonder how those might pan out...?

This has been a great decade. I had really awesome times in college. And now I am getting close to my PhD proposal. I just got a paid summer visit to NASA. It was a pleasant surprise because I made up my mind to go into the consultancy business.
The experimental music and metal scenes have been great. And the movies? Well the LOTR trilogy and The Dark Knight rival any blockbuster from before. I loved works like Mulholland Drive, A Requiem For A Dream, Memento, Eternal Sunshine, The Prestige, No Country for Old Men, The Departed, Hotel Rwanda, etc. There were also many great and interesting foreign films like Le scaphandre et le papillon, Der Untergang, Amelie, Cidade de Deus, Das Leben der Anderen, Spirited Away, Pan's Labyrinthe, Infernal Affairs, Oldboy, Zwartboek, etc. For the Holocaust there is the Pianist which is up there with Schindler's List. For Taratino fans there is Kill Bill and of course the upcoming Inglorious Bastards. I mean to say that the movies in this decade have been more rubbish than usual is just bullshit imo.
Broadband is definitely upgrade over the 90s. 56K internet was great? WTF? Surfing on 56K internet was like fucking a girl in the arse without lube man. It's fucking regrettable. I welcome the era of broadband and internet social networking galore.

One of the best things about this decade has been fictional television shows - it now seriously rivals film as an art form. From 24 to The West Wing, from Life on Mars to LOST, from The Office to Curb Your Enthusiasm, from nuBSG to nuWho, it's been a great decade.
What people forget when evaluating decades is that every decade had a proliferation of mostly bullshit with a significantly lower amount of good stuff. Music? There was a lot of shit in the 60s, 70s and 80s (although I do agree with the consensus that it was better on average). Same goes for movies. Lot of dumb, crappy movies made before 2000 as well. Also, before 1990 and before 1980 and so on.
We mainly remember the good stuff, because hey- who wants to remember the bad stuff?
Though I gotta say, I don't like the 00s as much as the 90s.

The problem with the 00s is that even while there is a lot of sh1t music, the music which is celebrated as "good" or "critically acclaimed" is even worse. I am of this generation yet I prefer 90s-60s music far more. Jimi Hendrix is better than anything out right now. Mainstream bands like Queen, Led Zep, Radiohead (ok still big in the 00s) and even Nirvana were good. What passes for mainstream now is simply derivative. It lacks the artistry of previous generations. Movies have been the only quirk in this decade, I can't argue that movie output has deteriorated as this would simply be untrue. Politically its been a nightmare, as someone mentioned an unnecessary and illegal war, major economic collapse which is still in progress.
That's the truth.
That said however, I know how the '00's will end and for a nominal fee, I'll be glad to pass on that information.
