Eurostile and Science Fiction

Here's something to catch your attention.

Enterprise's titles get some attention towards the end, and that attention's gotten me wondering about the typeface used for them, and the typeface from it was originally derived, whether we know it as "Millenium", "Starfleet Bold Extended", "Red Alert" or some other name.

What do we know about how that typeface was originally created, and by whom?

Can Messrs. Sternbach, Okuda, Probert, Mandel, etc. - and anyone else involved whose name(s) I'm surely not recalling - shed any light on that?

Apparently, this typeface is extremely popular in television and movies. Looks like it has been for over 45 years.

I would suggest that it has been over-used. Now it's a cliché.

It would be interesting to learn of its origins, though.

It's mainly just an expanded version of Microgramma (which had no lower-case letters) and only has a separate name so they could get people to pay for it twice.

Which is all fine, but back on point: about the history behind Millenium AKA Starfleet Bold Extended AKA Red Alert?
