EURO 2012

Yes- Pearl Harbour '41, I know. I was more refering to D-Day, where they really got involved in Europe bar Italy. Still, it came across as inaccurate of me and I apologize. I was only continuing the cheap joke. I don't want this to go off track- the world wars have nothing to do with football.

What? What madness is this? Have you never seen Escape to Victory?

We didn't win WW2, however I do think our involvement is overlooked sometimes. If we hadn't held the line until the Japanese gave the Americans a reason and Hitler pulled a heel turn on Stalin then things would have been very different. And even when it comes to D-Day itself, the majority of troops that landed were British and Commonwealth, and the landings would have been so much harder if the British Intelligence Services hadn't played the Germans so well; even when the first reports of an Allied attack came in the Germans still believed it was a feint and that the real invasion was going to be Calais (I think) because they trusted their spies so much not knowing they were working for us.

Of course none of this gives us a god given right to win a game of football, this is correct :guffaw:

^^ If it weren't for the Americans we'd all be speaking German now......and be able to take a decent penalty......!

Yes, they know how to do it properly. :p
We do have Hart now though, so it might not be quite as bad if it came to that.

Some of those German players are like machines on the pitch. They're just too good.
But then I am 1/4 German so I'll support them a lot more than the average English citizen would. After England and the underdogs I'll support Germany. I'd favour them against Spain, France or Italy any day.

Very true. I never denied this though. ;)
No, I haven't seen it- I have seen a few other war films though.

I sometimes find myself involuntarily supporting Germany, just because they play in black shorts and white shirts...it's instinctive!

Meh. Why do they only show the Spain vs. Croatia game on German TV? I want to see the Italy game.

I don't have those fancy channels but for once, the livestreaming works (it's been abysmal in the first days of the tournament).

I've just gone with live text for these. Even the tika-taka-worshipping Guardian team say it's boring.

Italy score and top the group as it stands...

I have a fancy Qatari sport channel now, on this channel there is an Englishman who's stealing the job of a Frenchman. You can't trust those foreigners.

The commentator on ZDFinfo is more entertaining than the game. He comes off as grumpy - probably because he only got to comment the game on a channel hardly anyone watches. Italy vs. Ireland seems to be better than the Spain game.

At least he's the first commentator to actually pronounce Cesare Prandelli's name the right way.

The stress is on the first syllable, not on the second. CEsare. Not CeSAre.

Pronouncing the players' names wrong is a time-honoured tradition among commentators. ;)

Awesome! German TV just showed Irish fans waving a banner saying: "Angela Merkel thinks we're at work!"

:D

Well, as I said and the article mentioned, it happened before. So not really "an extraordinary conspiracy". Once burned, etc etc.

But yay for Italy, anyway! :techman:

No it hasn,t. I remember that Swedem-Denmark game well. It was a completely normal match with both teams still trying to score after the 2:2.It was just a coincidence. If they had needed a 0:0 or 1:0 or something I'd be concerned, but you can't plan a 2:2 without looking completely foolish.
