EURO 2012

A shame in the end, but as it got closer I was kind of expecting it. Congrats to Italy.

Time to support Germany now, eh?

Italy definitely deserved that with the play, congrats! And we went out at our standard stage, so that's ok, we don't really have any embarassment this time.

I would like us to win one of these penalty shootouts for once though, it's just depressing. And I honestly thought Cole would score that.

Don't know mate - I thought our whole approach to the game was embarrassing. Playing for penalties from HT in normal time. Do any of the England players know that we're wank at penalties?!

I don't mind who wins now, Germany or Italy. Even Portugal at an absolute push. Just as long as it's not ultra-fucking-boring Spain. :techman:

Well at least he was on target and the goalie had to save it, unlike Young's.

We won our group. We made the quarter finals and got within a few kicks of the semis. Not bad considering how little time the manager had beforehand, not to mention the injuries we've had. I'm sure as hell happier than I was when we went out of the World Cup.

Yeah, they did what they could. It's amazing that they lasted this long against Italy. It's not a shame to lose that way against a better team.

Not bad considering we were carrying so many passengers either tbh. Young was awful for the entire tournament. Milner wasn't much better. Very hard for Gerrard and Parker to dominate the midfield when it's effectively 2 vs 4/5.

We seriously need to look at other options on the wing. I'd never play Young again after this tournament and surely there's someone better than Milner. We'd have been as well playing Downing and Johnson FFS.

Watched it with my father. Woah. What a game. We built up a 100-minutes assault on England's net, and yet we couldn't get it in. I was really worried we would get kicked out for a random defensive mistake. Still, Italy was encomiable, both tactically and individually. De Rossi was awesome as usual, as was Pirlo (his penalty was seven kinds of ballsy: it turned the whole series of shoot-out around) Basically, we ruled. :D

I want England to win, too, but it'll probably be Italy.
You are on my bad side.

It's still very tense even without any goals.
The number of goals has nothing to do with the tenseness or the enjoyment of the game. :p

I can't believe it's still 0:0. Italy is awesome - right up to the 6-yard box...
Ye, we sorely need a striker: Balotelly is too isolated, and doesn't seem to have the intuition he needs. We need a new Pippo Inzaghi.

Diamanti looks like he spent years in a prison with the random tattoos on his arm. That looks really ugly.
It's getting common on football players recently, at least in Italy. Most of the have tattoos, and not always of the tasteful kind.

Haha, Pirlo awesome. Beautiful Panenka.
Il cucchiaio! :techman:

I'm so fucking glad I was wrong. Weeeeeeeeeeeeee!

*dances around*

Yay!

*squeaks of joy*
*dances with Emilia*

Same old England, always losing...from 12 fucking yards. After 25 minutes we just dropped our tempo, which had Italy in trouble early on. If Roy won't change these tactics he should save himself the trouble and fuck off, were not West Brom playing for 10th place in the PL.

Hart (6) - Woeful kicking again and spilt the ball again, I dream of the day he learns to catch. At least he was very sharp at coming off his line and marshalling his defence.

Johnson (7) - One of his best games for ENG and tried to get forward to offer something. However missed the easiest chance he will EVER get in a ENG shirt from 6 yards + several times loss the ball cheaply.

Terry (7) - He maybe a total TWAT but he put his body n soul into the game but was lucky that Balotelli didn't score when he broke the line several times.

Lescott (7) - Pretty much like Terry (twat bit withstanding)

A.Cole (7) - Solid at the back and overrated going forward so the norm for him. Shocking penalty though and will never live it down.

Milner (5) - Average as you can get, if he doesn't leave Man City to find regular playing time, he must be axed from ENG.

Parker (7) - I thought for first 45 mins he was excellent, hussled Italy and even went on a few surprise dribbles but dropped off after half time.

Gerrard (6) - Roy held Gerrard back and it helped our defence but CRIPPLED our attack. Never got forward like he does for Liverpool and his passing game was average tonight but great penalty in the shootout.

Young (6) - Early on ran at the full backs but then dissapered from the entire game after that and his penatly was shocking, you NEVER choose power over placement. His ENG place has to be under threat from Chamberlain after a very very poor EURO.

Rooney (5) - Wasted all his energy coming back and looked knackered after 30 mins. Never linked up with Welbeck and Carroll but that more down to them and was BEGGING for Gerrard to link up with him, SO ISOLATED.

Welbeck (4) - Had a fantastic to score when Rooney laid it on a plate for him. Rest of his game DID NOTHING apart from lose the ball and make pathetic runs.

SUBS
Walcott (5) - Outside of 2 runs, never got on the ball and shown again why he is not a winger. Has the pace to get in behind the defence like Owen and the finishing ability to match --- PLAY HIM UP FRONT.

Carroll (5) - Won a few balls but he only seems to care about heading it and not where to head it. ABSOLUTEY AWFUL when he had the ball at his feet and ZERO movement.

Henderson (4) - Was he on the pitch?

Oh, I agree completely. There were a couple of dull moments towards the end of 90 minutes when both teams sort of just gave up and decided to wait for extra time, but it was very exciting (although still kinda frustratingly stupid because it shouldn't have gone to penalty kicks).

^^I think those are pretty fair marks, Jax, although I'd have rated Carroll and Walcott a little higher. When Walcott got the ball he tried to do something with it and he certainly looked more dangerous than Young, and I thought Carroll did better than Welbeck, though it did enclourage us to go long.

I'm Gerrard's biggest fan but I thought he was terrible last night. After his cramp he totally disappeared. If we had any decent options on the bench he would have been taken off in the 2nd half. And against a talented Italian midfield he didn't seem to know what his role was. He's not a defensive midfielder but was kept back so deep, he was non-existent as an attacking threat. Same problem with Gerrard, he fancies himself as an orthodox central midfielder but doesn't have the discipline or positional sense to play in that role effectively against the very best teams. That's why his best seasons with Liverpool have been spent either on the wing or playing behind the main striker.

But Gerrard was far from the only one who played badly. Only Johnson and maybe Hart and Terry came out with any credit. The rest were all terrible, including 'golden boy' Rooney who was pointless yet again. He's still living off the great Euro 2004 tournament he enjoyed as a teenager, he's been awful for England since (in tournaments at least). In fact, even Carroll was more effective than Rooney last night.

Not surprised that England have been dumped out by a vastly superior team. This England team is incredibly limited and the future does not look bright either. I don't see any great talent coming through, nothing like a young Gerrard, Scholes, Rooney etc. Prepare for years of mediocrity.

I think one of England's several problems is that even when we do have talent, we don't have enough of it. To really go anywhere you need a strong bench, at least in places, and you only had to see who came on for Parker to see our problem here.

Rooney is an odd one, maybe Roy shouldn't have brought him back into the team, but of course if he hadn't played him he might well have ended up castigated for leaving our best player (in some eyes) on the bench. I've never been a huge fan of him as a player, and it'll take a lot to forgive him for the crap he gave England supporters in 2010, but he wasn't fit, he was off the pace and lacking matches. If he hadn't missed the first two games and hadn't missed the tail end of the season...who knows. I doubt it would have made too much difference.

Well, Rooney is at least one of the few (or at least not enough) players on the England team who's a genuine star player in his own club. If you look at teams like Germany or Spain, you'll see that almost every single player, even on the bench, is crucial to their team's success in club football. Would Liverpool lose that much without Glen Johnson, Arsenal without Oxlade-Chaimberlain or United without Welbeck?
That's what seperates a decent team from one that has a shot at winning the tournament imo. (eta: and it's probably especially problematic for England, because they don't have a consistent, recognisable playing philosophy like Germany, Netherlands, Spain, etc., that remains even when the manager changes.)

Italy deserved the win. But I really feel bad for England. That penalty curse is getting absurd.

It's not as bad as the curse of being shit and not winning the matches in the first place.

Anyway, glad we lost, no more football for 2 years.
