Escalator - Is it a ride or a tool?

Escalator - Ride or Tool?

Usually, at the airport, which is the only place I've seen a moving sidewalk, there are clearly marked signs saying "Stand on the right, walk on the left." I'm usually walking, to get to where I need to be, so as long as everyone obeys the rules, I'm cool with it.

Escalators--the moving stairs--are often too narrow to pass, so I just stand there and wait my turn. I can deal with it.

What really grinds my gears is that, invariably, some ninny will get off the escalator and just STAND THERE, trying to decide where to go. This ninny, of course, doesn't seem to realize that there are 20 people about to plow right into the back of him if he doesn't move his ass.

So, is an escalator (or a moving sidewalk) a ride to get you somewhere w/out working for it, or is a tool to be used along with climbing/walking to help you get somewhere faster?

I say... it's not a fucking ride. Move your legs, lazy. (And don't start whining about handicapped. Of course I don't think we should dump people out of wheelchairs onto escalators and yell, "Move it, gimpo!")

Hell no. It's a moving platform. I stand in the middle and let it take me up. If someone behind me is too impatient to wait the 5-10 seconds that takes, and just has to show everyone how important it is that they get where they are going by walking up the escalator, usually loudly bemoaning the fact that people are in their way, well tough luck.
I say both of these are example of jumping from the ends of the spectrum of courtesy and diving right into the pool of bitchiness. :D

Sometimes I walk up the escalator, if there's nobody in the way. I'd never make any effort to pass anybody; it's at most a ten-second ride. And sometimes, if I'm tired, I just ride it.

I can't think of a single escalator or moving sidewalk in my city that is wide enough for someone to pass.

I tend to stand still on escalators because I have difficulty with stairs due to arthritis. On moving walkways I will walk if possible but as I am often pushing a full shopping trolley when I use them, when I am I stand still.

Moving sidewalks I walk on.

But escalators, I always stand there. Why do more work than you have to when the ride only takes a few seconds? But most escalators I've been on are inside malls so everybody is just standing there with their bags. Not that I go to the mall all the time, but I honestly can't think of any other places that have escalators right now.

You can ride or walk, but just be courteous to others who wish to do the opposite. Facts and circumstances make either option quite understandable.

The conference centers that I've been to that have escalators are only one person wide. If you want to climb stairs, you'd better take the actual stairs, because no one is giving way to you on the escalator. ;)

Oh, how I hate people who block escalators. Among all my every-day problems, that one might be the one that bugs me the most.

I think it is rather rude to walk on an escalator, so I definitely do not. A moving sidewalk -- no idea

How is it in any way rude?

Because it is putting your schedule ahead of the comfort of those who are standing. The very few times I've had people pass me on an escalator they were just rushing for a few seconds that really wouldn't help their time overall and were just being annoying by walking by,

I really don't care so long as you obey the rule: stand on the right, walk on the left.

This. Sometimes I'm lazy and feel like standing there (at the right) but most of the time I've got shit to do, so get out of the way.

Nothing makes me more furious than a group of people standing in the middle of an escalator without a care in the world, totally oblivious to everything around them. Ask Ashu. Just makes me murderous with rage.
I hate escalating with you..

Or maybe some of us just don't like waiting for what can often be a slow ride to the top\bottom, especially on long escalators. I don't walk all the time, but if there's room to walk, why not do so? If you do it frequently, you're actually saving a lot of time in the aggregate.

I mean, unless they're bumping into you and knocking you over in order to pass you, I don't know why anyone would find them annoying. Do you get annoyed if someone walks faster than you on the sidewalk?

I suppose it would depend on how wide the escalators are when Michael Chris lives. Here in Tasmania it would be rude to pass someone on an escalator as our escalators are only one, or in a few cases 1.5 people wide. You can't pass someone without physical contact. Also I cannot think of an escalator in Tasmania that travels more than one floor though we used to have a two story escalator in one department store a few years ago.
