Later I realized it is never really mentioned why the Klingons would be arming the villagers in the first place before the feds get there.

I just watched this one on Monday. The only reason anyone seems interested in the planet is the abundance of medicinal herbs, mentioned by McCoy at the beginning of the episode. It was a throw-away line, but they had already used the "we need this planet because of its tactical location" bit earlier in the season.

Or was there another reason the Klingons were interested in the planet? Maybe with all the planet's secret herbs and whatnot, it would be a good location for a KFC.

It's unique in that it actually ends on a sad/negative note, unlike most TOS episodes which always end in a smile--

Someone once observed that "A Private Little War" most strongly evoked Vietnam in that it is the only episode in which Kirk, Sock and McCoy all sustain notable injuries.

Someone else also observed that the throw-away line "I'll make a Klingon of you yet" suggested that Klingon was a political affiliation, like Communist or Fascist, rather than a race. If only Trek had been that complex...

Actually "Private Little War" acts as if "Errand of Mercy" never happened. Everyone during the episode talks about war with the Klingons being imminent. Didn't the Organians make it clear at the end of "Errand" that they were omnipresent throughout the universe, and that they would step in to prevent such a war?

I just watched A Private Little War which was much better than I remembered. The only thing bothering me was the evil evil woman in the garden of Eden metaphor which was underlined a bit too heavily. But the ending is excellent, and the small Spock/Chapel/M'Benga subplot is fun as well.

If someone wants to talk about arc, the only episode to mention the ramifications of the "Errand of Mercy" events is "The Trouble With Tribbles", which refers quite a bit to the provisions of the Organian treaty.

I dunno, even in context that line sounded to me like praising him for his Klingon attitude than suggesting he could some day be a Klingon.

Still, Star Trek mostly ignored the most logical inferrence of there being a Klingon Empire - that surely there must be numerous other species trod underfoot by the Klingons. I can pretty much count on one hand the amount of times a race servile to the Klingons was mentioned.

However, yeah, the tendency to merely group races, cultures and ideologies together tended to be a little simplistic. If you're logical, then it naturally follows you have pointy ears and a bowler cut, and if you like money, your ears are enormous and an erogenous zone to boot.

It's not an arc; it's just someone at the switch paying attention to what came before. My guess is that "someone" was Dorothy Fontana.
