Eric Bana cast as new villain! Potential spoilers....

Nero sounds kinda cartoony to me. I hope they end up changing that name. Anyone agree?
Dopey names can be changed right up to the first day of shooting (and thanks to the miracle of ADR, even after shooting!). Dopey actors are harder to work around. Bana is a good pick, and that's what I'm more concerned about at the moment.

Who says that "Nero" is not a code name? Just something they are releasing to the public, and not the character's actual name?

Maybe the historical figure we know as Nero was actually a time traveling Romulan! That could explain why Romans and Romulans have so many characteristics in common. ;)

Man Vektor, you're scaring me there...Scaring me because I think just you may be right... Actually that could make for a quite interesting plot...

I think he's an excellent actor. He stole the show in Black Hawk Down and was far and away the best of the younger actors in Troy. He was superb in Munich and did as well as could be expected with the underwritten character he played in Hulk. I think he'll make a great villain (hell, he would make a great ST captain!).

Interesting that they seem to have been after Antipodeans, in the form of Crowe, Urban and him. Of the three, I'd be happiest with Bana. Not as big a name (or asshole!) as Crowe, thus less likely to overshadow the movie. And while Urban is a good actor, despite his appearances in LOTR and the Bourne Supremacy, I think of him as being associated with tripe like Doom and Pathfinder. Bana's casting makes the movie seem a bit more upmarket somehow.

Re: Eric Bana cast as new villain!

With a name like Nero, he's gotta be one sadistic bastard. The real Nero burned a quarter of Rome to the ground and stood on his rooftop playing a lyre and laughing about the whole thing. The Romulan Nero better be totally off his rocker.

Re: Eric Bana cast as new villain!

Actually, the only Roman historian alive at the time of the Great Fire who wrote about it tells an entirely different story - that Nero was elsewhere at the time and rushed back to Rome to organize and pay for the relief effort. The "Nero fiddled while Rome burned" is an apparent invention of later writers.

Re: Eric Bana cast as new villain!

Maybe there was two of them - one an evil Romulan and one a good Roman.

Re: Eric Bana cast as new villain!

Maybe Rom from DS9 can have a cameo in the film. That way we could get a scene of the villainous Nero burning Rom

Re: Eric Bana cast as new villain!

I don't think he's a Romulan, I'll bet he's Starfleet. I can't see them casting a big name actor to be in tons of makeup, that according to Canon, can't have any contact with the main characters anyway......I'll bet he's a big shot Captain, gone bad.

Time travel, baby!

It makes anything possible.

Let's just hope they can pull it off as flawlessly and as imaginatively as they did on "Enterprise."

Re: Eric Bana cast as new villain!

"flawless" "imaginative" and "Enterprise", don't see those 3 words in the same sentence very often!

Re: Eric Bana cast as new villain!

I don't see the problem with Kirk and Co. meeting Romulans. Kirk would think they are Vulcans, and the Romulans probably have no interest in correcting him.

Look, we already worked this out on "Enterprise."

As long as the Starfleet cameras don't record anything; nobody writes anything down; and Starfleet doesn't catch the name, we're fine.

Romulans, Borg, Ferengi. It's all good.

Re: Eric Bana cast as new villain!

Well, I'd have been happier if they'd actually cast Karl Urban, as I'm really not a fan of Bana and have been a fan of Urban's for a decade now, but it's interesting to see someone who's essentially a borderline "A" lister on the casting for a Trek movie.
