ER - Ross, Hathaway and Benton Return This Week!

I thought it was a very classy way to bring them back to the show. Beautifully done.
Had me tearing up. "The kidney went to some doctor." damn that was perfect on so many levels. The sort of subtle touch this show excelled at.

An absolutely fantastic episode.

Much of this last season as been top quality, easily on par with the best of the early years. I'm extremely glad we've got a show, which looked like it was going to whimper out, going out with a touch of class.

Excellent. :)

I actually thought that was the worst kind of bullshit way to end the episode.

Carol knows the heart went to some little girl's mother, but didn't catch the name of the doctor that got the kidney?

I did like Dr Benton comin' back, though.

Wow, it was definitely weird seeing Clooney in the hospital scrubs again! It was cool of him to do it though (being the mega-movie star he now is), and makes me an even bigger fan than I already was.

And like others have said, I appreciate the restraint they showed with the episode. No big, cheesy reunion at the end (even though part of me would have liked to have seen it), and they never even found out who the kidney was meant for.

Classy stuff.

Normally transplant teams aren't given specific names of who organs are going to. They try to keep it confidential.

I liked the scene where Ross was going back and forth with the new kids about who they knew from Chicago. Just shows how long this show's been on the air and how much turnover they had.

I wonder if his repeated refusals to do it at the beginning of the season were genuine or not. Noah Wyle told TVGuide he was talking to him trying to get him to return. Eriq LaSalle returned because I believe he directed the episode (or is set to direct one of them).

How is knowing an organ went to an unnamed mother any different than knowing it went to an unnamed doctor?

Well I don't doubt that he had to be talked into it. He's made it pretty clear before that he wasn't fond of the soap opera direction they took the show in (which is the same reason I stopped watching). Plus I imagine he's got a pretty full schedule of his own now.

I was surprised how well he slipped back into the character though. There was a lot less of the shy, looking-at-the-ground thing he used to always do, but it still felt like I was watching the old Doug Ross.

^ Oh I agree entirely. We did get one of the looking at the ground scenes though when he was talking to Sam and Neela, but I don't think we had any where he was playing Doctor.

I watched last night for probably the first time in...4 or 5 years. Really liked it, but mostly for the old characters. It was so great to see Hathaway, Ross, Carter and Benton back again, and to see how they slipped so naturally back into their old roles. Time had clearly passed--but they clearly hadn't lost touch with their characters over that time. I love the way Benton was there for Carter, and how Doug and Carol are still together. It made me smile, and tear up a little bit.

And Susan Sarandon was great, though the script didn't give her much to do. The stuff she was saying about her grandson should have been much less cliched than it was. Sarandon was the reason that role was memorable. She was great.

I have to admit, the new characters didn't interest me at all. :o

I watched it and I have to say that the best part was seeing the older characters from previous ER Generations. Doug, Carol, and Benton were good choices for tonight's episode and I was impressed that they kept it true to form. I was expecting half way through for Carol to find out that the Kidney would go to Carter and try to talk the woman into it, but they kept it real by not letting her find out who the person receiving it was.

Agreed--I kept waiting for her to find out, and wanting her to find out...but it was much more realistic that she didn't.

Yeah, that made me tear up, too. Along with the way Benton stood by Carter. I was so afraid Carter was going to die...and I'm so glad he didn't.

Yeah, that was cool--a nice little in joke for longtime fans!

Yeah, I thought it was great to see him back especially. Clooney has come so far as an actor...but he slipped right back into the role as though he'd never left. That was pretty impressive. And I do think it's cool he came back. Of all the ones who could have said no, he certainly could have done so with the most ease. It was gracious that he did come back, and shows that he hasn't come so far that he doesn't remember how he got started. I really admire that.

ETA: Does anyone know if any of the four: Benton, Carter, Ross, Hathaway will be back for the final episode?

I think that's it for Clooney and Margulies but Wyle, LaSalle, Sherry Stringfield, and Laura Innes are all slated to appear for the finale. They had some production pictures up on spoilertv.com I think.

LaSalle already directed LAST week's episode. Hopefully he'll have directed another one.

Clooney has always been quite open about what his career owes to ER. He's always quick to give other people credit for his successes.

Great episode. I'm SO glad they didn't make the final name connection between Carter and Ross & Hathaway.

Finally got a chance to watch it. I really enjoyed it. It has been a lot of fun seeing them all return this season.

Thank you! I was wondering if that would be it for them or not. I think it was a nice send-off for the characters--a fitting way to bring them back in for an episode.

Yeah, and that's very cool--makes me like him even more.

Agreed--much more realistic that way. They ended up really helping out Carter without even knowing it.

No Gloria Reuben? Or did she already come back this year? I haven't been watching.

^ Last year. Her character's son's HIV infection had become AIDS and he was taken to County General. We had a couple of name drops in that episode too.
